{UAH} PRESS STATEMENT/PUBLIC MESSAGE.
(Picture: School pupils, victims of the Anti-Apartheid youth uprisings. Some faced jail and torture, others brutally murdered by the racist Apartheid regime in South Africa never to be seen alive again by their relatives, simply because they demanded for freedom in their own God-given country)
Fellow Ugandans, the people of South Africa & Africans across the continent.
After Former South African Apartheid President FW De Klerk recently denying that Apartheid was a crime against humanity, I was glad to learn that the ANC ruling party rightly now desires to enact clear laws making the denial of Apartheid criminalised in a manner similar to the anti-semitism laws in France, and the holocaust denial laws in Germany.
On behalf of the people of Uganda, allow me to state that while the South African Truth & Reconciliation Commission was perfect in as far as creating Freedom day (a public holiday on 27th April for all South Africans to celebrate election day 1995 when every citizen first decided together the destiny of their country), and also creating the Day of Reconciliation (a public holiday every 16th December intended to foster reconciliation and national unity), the commission however seems to have lacked the will to directly shame the devil of Apartheid.
Now in light of Mr. De Klerks recent Apartheid denial convictions, and the resulting continent-wide furore, I would also urgently recommend that the people and government of South Africa look into the possibility of starting an Annual International Apartheid Remembrance Day to specifically commemorate the end of Apartheid, remember its devastation, recall it's heroes, mourn its victims, educate the younger generations about it's sad history and it's debunked philosophy, and also confront it's denial as a heinous crime against humanity.
For example Germany celebrates every 3rd October the fall of the Berlin wall. Every March 8th, Europe celebrates the grand annual World War II memorial ceremonies remembering the end of Nazism, and mourning all those who lost their lives in the quest for freedom from fascism. The annual memorial of the 1994 Rwanda genocide takes place every 7th April in remembrance of the one million innocent people who lost their lives for no reason except their ethnicity..
Clearly an international Anti- Apartheid day could serve as the much needed reminder of the brutality and mercilessness of systemic and legalized bigotry in a world that today seems to increasingly forget the actual barbarity of such coordinated and concerted fascism.
An International Day Against Apartheid could be held for example on 11th February, the day that a triumphant Nelson Mandela walked out of prison in 1990, to global applause, after 27 years of inhumane treatment and bitter incarceration simply because he desired to see his people live in respect and dignity in their own country. A day to remember all those who not only gave their lives, their limbs and some even their careers and their resources so that future generations of South Africans could have the freedom that they enjoy today, but also others who were forced to make the ultimate sacrifice of their young lives taken from them by a heartless regime that brutally imposed itself on Africans in Africa.
I humbly request that be looked into the possibility of holding such a grand annual memorial ceremony which all African leaders could be invited to, a solemn occasion possibly held at à historic site like the infamous Robben island which to this day oozes the pain and tears of countless innocent South African ancestors, and including invitations to the annual event for all surviving international anti-apartheid activists as well as all willing world leaders of today.
The disturbing utterance by FW De Klerk is an indication of a possible attempt to diminish the cruelty, horrors, suffering and devastating scale of Apartheid on an entire indeginous people's, their cultures, livelihoods, freedoms, liberty and sovereignty on their own ancestral lands, on their own natural resources, and their own God-given country. An attempt to diminish all the efforts made by countless leaders across Africa, countless ordinary people across the continent, and even more around the world who for decades continued relentlessly to demand an end to Apartheid, relentlessly praying for the end of Apartheid, and doing anything else they could to see the end of Apartheid mostly in vain.
That sacrifice and contribution from around the world needs such a day to be properly honored.
The evil of Apartheid South Africa must be indelibly marked into the worlds conscience on an annual international basis as a unique, stand-alone, despicable milestone of hate and plunder in the history of mankind. And the suffering of the people of South Africa (which happened as some of the most powerful nation's of this world watched passively for decades and/or even shamelessly supported in broad daylight), the international community today must see that this entire heinous chapter of biblical scale oppression of an entire people must not be repeated, maligned, nor forgotten by humanity either today, tomorrow or for centuries to come.
Thank You & God Bless Africa!
