NY Department of Corrections suspends visits statewide until April 11

New York state is banning visitation at its prisons until April 11 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The ban goes into effect at 5 p.m. Saturday, according to an announcement by the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

“The Department’s greatest concern is the safety and well-being of our employees and individuals within our care, custody, and supervision, particularly during this developing public health emergency,” according to a release.  “To that end, the Department must swiftly impose restrictions and precautions to prevent additional spread of infectious viral transmission of COVID-19 in both correctional facilities and the community writ large.”

The Department said that while in-person visitation “will be impossible to replace,” there will be one free phone call per week to inmates as well as two free secure messages via electronic tablet.

The suspended visitation also applies to “family reunion” programs. However, “non-contact” legal visits will still be permitted, “as requests are submitted, and that option remains available within the facilities,” the release said.
