{UAH} Cuomo orders coronavirus containment zone in New York state; Italy sees largest single daily jump in deaths
As the outbreak of the novel coronavirus grows in the United States, several major colleges such as American University and Ohio State University are shuttering classrooms and moving coursework online through at least month's end. There are more than 750 reported cases of covid-19, which has been detected in more than 30 states, prompting many to declare states of emergency. Globally, Italy saw its highest single-day increase in deaths related to the virus.
In Washington, President Trump on Tuesday is seeking to drum up support from Republican senators for an economic plan to stabilize the U.S. economy shaken by the coronavirus outbreak, but faces a potentially uphill battle as he pitches costly measures such as a payroll tax cut.
Here are the latest developments:
- Italy's coronavirus lockdown upends the most basic routines and joys and will remain in place until at least April 3. Italians will be told to not travel, schools nationwide will be shuttered, and nearly all public events, from soccer matches to funerals, will halt as the government tries to curb the spread of the virus that has infected more than 10,000 people and killed more than 630.
- President Trump will meet with Senate Republicans as his coronavirus economic plan is met with resistance. Some Republican lawmakers are leery of the plan's cost, while Democrats are pursuing policies such as paid sick leave that address the virus itself.
- The airline industry continues to reel from the global outbreak with U.S. carriers slashing routes, projecting lower profits and even cutting executive salaries.

Maryland nursing homes urged to restrict visitors, colleges prep for two weeks of remote instruction
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) said that he has instructed all nursing homes and assisted living facilities to limit visitors and bar workers from traveling internationally, measures he hopes will prevent an outbreak like the one in the Kirkland, Wash. nursing home, 18 of whose residents have died.
"We want to do everything in our power to avoid that situation," Hogan said at the start of a cabinet meeting in Annapolis. "This problem continues to evolve and escalate rapidly."
The University of Maryland System, which oversees most of the state's public colleges including the flagship University of Maryland at College Park, is preparing to offer remote classes for all students for two weeks following spring break, which begins Friday.
Hogan said he expects a rapid rise in diagnosed cases as testing expands and, like the rest of the nation, Maryland will soon move from trying to contain the virus to mitigating its impact.
Hogan, who is chair of the National Governors Association, said governors were told in a White House briefing Monday that 1 million tests are available nationwide, and 4 million tests will be available by the end of the week.
Deputy Health Secretary Fran Phillips, who is overseeing the state's response, said Maryland's lab has the ability to test 100 people per day, but that capacity will soon expand to 800 people daily.
The governor also offered additional information on two coronavirus patients announced earlier Monday by Prince George's County officials. Hogan said they are a couple in their 50s who took the same Egyptian cruise that has been linked to a cluster of cases in Maryland and elsewhere. Four other cruise passengers, who have not displayed symptoms, are still awaiting test results.
