Trump: Coronavirus-fighting supplies have landed at JFK

President Trump announced Sunday that a huge cache of desperately-needed coronavirus-fighting supplies has landed in New York.

The first flight in the FEMA project dubbed “Project Airbridge” landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport with 2 million masks and gowns, more than 10 million gloves and 70,000 thermometers that will go to New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is working with private companies on the initiative to “expedite the movement of critical supplies from other countries to the United States,” the president said.

FEMA has scheduled 19 additional flights, and hopes to have about 50, Trump said.

State and city leaders, including New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, have been pleading with the federal government for supplies such as ventilators and masks for healthcare workers amid a widespread shortage.

Trump on Sunday suggested that some hospitals were stockpiling with the equipment.

“We have some healthcare workers, some hospitals … hoarding equipment including ventilators,” Trump said. “We have to release those ventilators — especially hospitals that are never going to use them.”

Asked to elaborate on the claims, Trump said, “I think people should check that because there’s something going on.”

“I don’t think it’s hoarding. I think it’s maybe worse than hoarding,” he added.

It wasn’t clear what facilities he was referring to.

In an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity,” Friday, Trump suggested that New York won’t need the 30,000 ventilators that Cuomo has said will be necessary.

The president also praised FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers for building an “incredible” 2,900-bed hospital in New York’s Javits Center. He said they are now moving to other states to build hospital beds, including New Jersey and Louisiana.

“It’s an incredible complex, top of the line hospital,” Trump said. “They did it so quickly. Everyone is trying to figure out how they did it, including me — and I was a good builder.”
