NYC’s coronavirus death toll keeps growing as pandemic claims 3,500

The coronavirus pandemic has now claimed more than 3,500 people in New York City alone as the Big Apple clocked its worst day in the month-long calamity.

An additional 806 New Yorkers lost their lives to the deadly disease between Monday evening and Tuesday evening, new statistics from the city’s Health Department show.

That brings the total number of fatalities to a heartbreaking 3,544.

Another 5,826 people tested positive for the virus in the past day. The city now has 74,602 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

A total 19,177 coronavirus patients have been hospitalized during the outbreak, up from 15,333 Monday night.

“I never never thought something like this would happen again in New York,” said FEMA Regional Director Thomas Von Essen, who served as FDNY commissioner during the Sept. 11, 2011, terror attacks, of the staggering death toll in an interview with The Post.

“This crisis is a really tough one. It’s going to affect all of us. It’s kind of like Sept. 11,” Von Essen said.

The city blew past a bleak milepost when the city’s Tuesday morning tallies revealed that more 3,200 people have died from the coronavirus, surpassing the number of people killed on 9/11.
