{UAH} EDUCATION IN ANKOLE: Maryhill High School (Domine Dirige Nos;)

Maryhill High School is a catholic founded Girls' O' & A-level Boarding school located at Nyamitanga hill, Mbarara district. The school acquired its name from Mary Mother of Jesus and the hill on which it stands.

Mary hill High School is a girls' old, national boarding school. It opened its gates for the first time in 1961 with the aim of promoting the education of the girl child, and to build the nation. The school has since then grown and expanded into one of the best performing schools in the country.

Mbarara diocese realized the importance of educating a girl more than 50 years ago when most communities were blurred by traditionalism that groomed girls just to become house keepers.

In 1961, when there were already boys' schools; Ntare and Mbarara High School and Bweranyangi in Ankole, the diocese decided to start Maryhill High School.

The then Mbarara Diocese Bishop Rt. Rev. Bishop John Mary Ogez requested the Daughters of Mary and Joseph from England Sisters; Philomena Anderson, Mary Antoinella, Mary Hilda and Enda Maria to start the school.

It started with 25 girls in O'level. In 1964 it was commissioned by President Milton Obote and became government aided but church run. The students who mainly were from local poor peasant families were being recruited through parishes by the church and other community leaders.

During the 1979 liberation war, the school text books and equipment were destroyed and stolen leading to decline in staff and student morale affecting academic performance. It began improving steadily after 1986.

Sister Mary Xavier was the first headmistress and presided over the school from 1961-1963. The school has been built on religious values, and though catholic founded, there is respect for religious diversity.

Mary Hill now has a student population of about 1,500 students currently. In the last three years, the school has progressed academically. It is always among the top 50 at O'level schools, and among the best 15 at A'level schools in the country.

In 2015, government, with the support of the World Bank, funded the renovation of the school to a tune of Shs. 3.7bn funding and the school now has a new 350-seater library, a new staffroom, two science laboratories and extra offices. The construction and launching of these structures was presided over by President Yoweri Museveni. Government also gave it a new look with 400m tarmacked access roads in the school's compound.

With its mission of producing an all-round girls, Girls who have gone through Maryhill have had higher chances of succeeding in the outside world.
