{UAH} FACTS ABOUT FLOATING SUDDS AT NILE BRIDGE

FACTS ABOUT FLOATING SUDDS AT NILE BRIDGE

The moving island / sudds were part of the wetland system next to Kirinya Prison in Jinja, below the NWSC treatment plant and Skyfat factory.

Some communities had been farming inside the wetland peat. As the water levels of Lake Victoria kept rising, the peat lost elasticity and part of the wetland got detached from the ecosystem.

The detached part broke up into three sudds with the lighter one floating first towards the dam. The other two larger and heavier parts (seen in the pictures) are also floating in the same direction, albeit slower.

Stakeholders including NEMA, Eskom, UEGCL, UPDF, MoWE, MEMD etc are working together to remove the floating masses.
