TODAY IN HISTORY, APRIL 6 | OMUKAMA KABALEGA DIES

On this day in 1923, Omukama CHWA II Kabalega of Bunyoro-Kitara passed away at the age of 70, having made considerable contributions to the history of mankind.

Just like today, during Kabalega's reign (1870-1899), his empire was hit by 2 new and never-before-seen diseases; Syphilis (Kaberebenje) and Sleeping Sickness (1886-1887). The killer diseases grew to epidemic proportions.

Omukama Kabalega commissioned his indigenous scientists to 'make experiments in the interests of science'. A Cure for Sleeping Sickness and Vaccine for Syphilis were discovered. Later research showed that introduction of the (Syphilis) vaccine in to infants' bodies significantly reduced ones chances of contracting the disease in later life.
