SHOCKING NUMBER OF NIGHT BURIALS AS MAGUFULI EYES ELECTIONS

Tanzania seems to be getting badly burnt after dancing with fire.
The country is registering an unprecedented number of deaths due to what authorities term as 'matatizo ya kupumua.'
This, some argue, is simply a diversion from the fact that the deaths may be related to Covid-19.

The fact that COVID-19 arrived in Africa late gave governments time to strategise and mobilise. UN officials predict the pandemic will kill at least 300,000 people in Africa and push more than 30 million into poverty.
In today's burial of the Former Prime Minister Lowassa's brother, several coffins could be seen behind his grave. This is an indication that many are losing their lives. Videos have circulated online showing trucks transporting coffins in the middle of the night under tight security.

Tanzanians are waking up to fresh graves everyday after night time burials. Some sources indicate up to 58 people were buried in a single night in one location. The Tanzanian Government is hiding the truth of the extent of the calamity from it's people. But this is not the first time it has done so.

Last year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) expressed concern over the Tanzanian government's lack of transparency regarding reports of Ebola cases.

Given its an election year, President Magufuli seems to be curating the Covid-19 narative to his advantage. Earlierthis month, President John Magufuli refused to close down churches and mosques saying that God alone can deal with the pandemic and called for three days of national prayer.

This is despite the fact that he ordered schools closed in the face of the corona virus crisis. This means the President is aware that there is need to reduce person-to-person infections by limiting interaction. Observers note that the decision is based on the need to get support from faithful and religious leaders for the elections slated in October.

This strategy seems to be working as pastors reverently defend the President. This blind support has already seen some of them die due to corona virus. Some political analysts note that the President has gone from an authoritative Commander in Chief to an irresponsible priest-in-chief.

Due to his political chess game, it is ordinary people who are paying with their lives. The government has ruled that the largest hospital will not accept Covid-19 patients and the Amana Referral Hospital dedicated to the crisis has only been allocated funds for one ventilator.

To make matters worse, the country of 55 million people has just one COVID-19 testing lab in Dar es Salaam.
Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein, the President of Zanzibar has already started direct talks with the World Health Organisation and international organizations seeking funds and help to deal with the crisis. This means that Zanzibar is following its own path free from what is seen as Magufuli's risky policy.
