Uganda's Curriculum will never work unless the Education System is also Changed

A great number of critics continue to blame the curricular as being theoretical and they always demand for curriculum revisions. What they always consider as the curriculum is the study content and not any other components which make education relevant.

Much has been done on curriculum revision and little has been achieved as a consequence, simply because the education system does not favor the curriculum performance. In most cases it is the education system that fails the curriculum.

In Uganda today, we are in a system were passing the final examinations is all what matters - you find schools celebrating having attained good grades, and basing on this to rank the best schools in the country. In this case the academic grades matter much more than the skills studied for. Therefore, everyone who strives for prestige and intends to acquire a good job, he/she must have good or the best grade papers irrespective of whether he/she is competent or not in a particular skill.

As a result people end up fighting for grades rather than knowledge, skills, values and attitudes for a particular profession. This therefore renders the curriculum valueless and makes it impossible to effectively implement.

Another issue, is that almost everyone cries for practical education and any person picked at random will tell you that all we need are practical people. However, in this same country, practical people are considered to be people who were dull or dense in class or people who can not perform well in written examinations. Now if you undermine people who take practical training, pay them poorly, consider them semi-illiterate, and even recommend such courses for people who have failed in the main stream academic examinations; then why do you pretend to be advocating for it?

Therefore for a curriculum to be effective, also revise the education system such that it puts a conducive environment for the curriculum. Otherwise all the curriculum reviews will remain ineffective, after all what you consider necessary, you again take it as a minor - contradiction!
