CITIZENSHIP
Citizenship defines or describes a relationship between a particular individual and the Sovereign State.
OR
Citizenship is the status of a citizen with rights and duties.
A CITIZEN is a native member of a State.
Citizenship is provided for under Chapter Three of the 1995 Constitution of Uganda.
TYPES OF CITIZENSHIP
The Constitution of Uganda provides for Three (3) types of Citizenship;
CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTH
This is the citizenship that is granted to someone based on where they are born.
Article 10 of the 1995 Constitution provides that every person born in or outside Uganda one of whose parents or grandparents was at the time of birth of that person a citizen of Uganda by birth.
It also provides that a child of not more than five years of age found in Uganda, whose parents are not known, shall be presumed to be a citizen of Uganda by birth.
CITIZENSHIP BY REGISTRATION.
Article 12 of the 1995 Constitution of Uganda provides that (1) Every person born in Uganda—
(a) at the time of whose birth—
(i) neither of his or her parents and none of his or her grandparents had diplomatic status in Uganda; and
(ii) neither of his or her parents and none of his or her grandparents was a refugee in Uganda;
CITIZENSHIP BY NATURALISATION
Naturalisation is the acquisition of citizenship or nationality by somebody who was not a citizen or natiomal of that country when she or he was born.
Article 13 of the 1995 Constitution of Uganda provides that Parliament shall by law provide for the acquisition and loss of citizenship by naturalisation.
