{UAH} LEGAL WORD OF THE DAY
LEGAL WORD OF THE DAY
ABSCOND
/əbˈskɒnd,abˈskɒnd/
In simple English, it may mean to leave hurriedly and secretly, typically to escape from custody or avoid arrest.
In legal circles, when someone says a person has absconded, they mean that the person has failed to present themselves before the court when required or failed to carry out a legal duty given to them. This sometimes happens when someone is given bail in a criminal trial and that person fails or refuses to show up in court on the agreed date. Sometimes we will informally say that person has "jumped bail"
