THE MEN AFTER WHOM KAMPALA ROADS ARE NAMED
PART 1: WILLIAM MACKINNON
William Mackinnon was a Scottish entrepreneur who acquired a lease over the entire East Africa from Sultan Sayid Barghash in 1878. King Leopold II of Belgium inspired William to plunder East Africa and amass personal wealth. On 18th April 1888, William registered a company called the Imperial British East African Company [IBEACo] to rob East Africa of its natural resources. William hired all sorts of pugnacious mercenaries e.g., Capt. Lugard, Gerald Portal and F. de Winton to force East Africans provide labour. On many occasions, he persuaded the British Government to compensate him before colonizing East Africa. When the British government rejected his proposal, he run out of funds to pay his mercenaries and he retired to London a frustrated man, or thief. Mackinnon could have left East Africa empty handed if a respected missionary [names withheld] had not convinced the British Government to compensate Mackinnon and take on Uganda as a protectorate. Stressed, Mackinnon died in London on 22nd June 1893 before he could receive his compensation of 250,000 pounds that was approved by the British Government on July 1st 1895. William Mackinon has no statue or road named after him anywhere in Britain. However, in Uganda, KCCA mainatains a road named after a greedy entrepreneur that wanted to kill and main our ancestors to obtain forced labour. It's time to remove all these inauspicious vestiges of colonialism, esp. street names, and monuments dedicated to colonial persons responsible for brutalization and humiliation of Ugandans.
In the next part, Ssemagulu Musseum profiles William Mackinnon's mercenaries, Gerald Portal, Lugard and de Winton.
