{UAH} Russia Boosts Uganda With $3M to Fight Locusts 0

The Government of Russia through its Ambassador to Uganda, H.E Alexander Polyakov has contributed $3 million to Ugandan Government to help in the fight against Desert Locusts that invaded the Country from Kenya on 9th February, 2020 through Amudat and Moroto Districts in Eastern Uganda.

While handing over the dummy check to the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Hon. Vincent Bamulamgaki Ssempijja at MAAIF headquarters in Entebbe today, Polyakov said the $3 million contribution to Uganda is part of the larger Russian donation of $10 million to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

"Our contribution will be used to purchase pesticides, fuel, vehicles and sprayers as well as for the employment and training of personnel for the pest`s elimination". He said.

Hon. Ssempijja thanked Russian Government for the generous support towards ensuring food security for the people of Uganda and East Africa at large. He said the Government of Uganda developed a Desert Locust Control Contingency Plan that has controlled the Desert Locust spread and received support from various partners and donors including FAO (US $ 500,000 – through a Technical Cooperation Project); World Bank; Government of the Peoples Republic of China and others.

"We are sincerely grateful for the further support, for which you have announced today to respond to the current predictions as the country braces for more Desert Locust invasions. Your support in this area is indeed timely". He said.

Following the first invasion, the country has had two other invasions; on 14th April, 2020 and 16th May, 2020. During the last invasion of 16th May, 2020, a mixture of mature and immature locust swarms covering over 400 hectares entered Kapedo and Karenga in the North Eastern part of Uganda and these were controlled by the DLCO EA aircraft.

The function was also witnessed by the State Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Henry Aggrey Bagiire, FAO representative to Uganda, Mr. Antonio Querido, MAAIF`s under Secretary, Mr. Gyagenda Ssegawa and commissioners from MAAIF.
