{UAH} 2020 UNAA Trade and Investments Forum
Dear UNAA Members and Supporters.
Greetings from Los Angeles. My sincerest hope is that you and all your loved ones are keeping healthy and safe during the Corvid-19 pandemic.
As was recently confirmed by the UNAA President, Mrs. Henrietta Nairuba Wamala, the 2020 Annual UNAA Convention will indeed take place but with some significant differences. The first obvious difference will be the heavy use and reliance on virtual communication in the forums. Indeed, it is projected that most of this year's Trade and Investments Forum will take place via Zoom.
As has become the tradition, the forum will take place on the first day of the Labor Day Holiday weekend. For this year, it will be on Friday September 4th, 2020.
While past T&I forums have not be specifically themed, the one this year will look at trade and investment opportunities in the post Covid-19 environment. Here are some of the questions and issues that will be discussed.
1: What is Uganda exporting today and to where? How has this been impacted by the Corvid-19 pandemic.
Mr. Albert Kunihira, Research & Business Development Manager of Greening Uganda/Greening Forestry Services, has already accepted an invitation to talk to us about opportunities in the export of fresh foods to markets in Europe and the Middle East. Mr. Kunihira will also talk specifically about the growing avocado farming industry and how HASS Avocado which has been exporting avocados throughout the ongoing lock downs.
2: What is Uganda importing today (especially from China) and what opportunities exist in import substitution?
Are there opportunities for Uganda to begin to produce various things currently being imported from countries like China, India and the Middle East? Obviously, the big question is, have Ugandans become so totally dependent of the imported products that it would be impossible to competitively produce them in Uganda. Also, would Ugandans buy local equivalents if they became available. Maybe a case study could be the floor tiles produced by Goodwill-Uganda Ltd.
In addition to local markets, could Uganda produce "import substitution" products for export to neighboring countries?
Other than coffee, is there really anything that can be effectively imported or exported between Uganda and North America?
3: With regards to investment, considering the devastation of the C-19 lock downs, why would anyone consider investing in Uganda?
- What seriously reasonable sectors and industries could someone from the USA invest in in Uganda without having to actually move to Uganda?
- What opportunities exist in farming (bamboo, avocados, etc.)?
- What opportunities exist in real estate?
- What manufacturing sectors have reasonable investment potential?
- Is tourism ever going to become viable again and if so, how and when?
We look forward to an exciting and truly informative 2020 UNAA Trade and Investments Forum.
Sincerely.
Moses Wilson
Co-Coordinator
