BURUNDI: AN AFRICAN DESPOT DIES IN HIS COUNTRY'S POOR HEALTH FACILITY - THANKS TO THE CORONA VIRUS

CHANGE OF GUARDS - Mismanagement of social services is the tradition among most of Africa's despotic leaders. Education and health are the most affected as the said despots, their families and cronies seek for the same from abroad. They invest in the military that keeps them in power instead of improving the health care system for the benefit of their citizens. When they fall sick, they are flown abroad for medical attention. The popular health destinations for these despots are USA, UK and Germany while their families and cronies go to Nairobi, South Africa and India. Uganda's Museveni provides a presidential jet to his expectant daughter to be flown to Germany for delivery.

Burundi's despotic leader, Piere Nkurunziza had died at a local health facility in Karuuzi Province due to what the authorities have described as cardiac arrest. His wife was admitted in Nairobi where she was flown a few days ago after testing positive for COVID-19. His biological mother is said to be in a critical condition. Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, he downplayed the threat. He expelled the WHO Country Representative and three other officials whom he accused of interfering in the country's internal affairs over the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is highly probable that he has died of COVID-19.

Piere Nkurunziza, who had ruled Burundi for 15 years, was scheduled to handover office to his handpicked successor in August this year. This was after he had secured for himself a constitutional guarantee for his occupation of the newly created position of Overall Supreme Leader. He has ruled Burundi with an iron hand and lots of lives and property were destroyed while tens of thousands of his citizens were displaced from their homes. Burundi is one of Africa's poorest countries but just like all other despotic African leaders, its leadership did not give priority to improvement of health services. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic; these despots have to seek medical care from the same poor health facilities they had long neglected.

However, it won't be surprising when fellow African despotic leaders eulogize him as an exemplary nationalist, Patriot, Pan-Africanist, peacemaker, God Fearing etc. They will further praise him for having resisted 'western imperialism' by expelling the WHO representative, blocking foreign election observers and leading the way in pulling his country out of the ICC when the ICC resolved to investigate his killings. It is not African to attack the dead but wait a minute, these African despots deserve neither respect nor compassion unless they style up and focus their attention on the well-being of their citizens.
