{UAH} The Democratic Party of 1980 was Solid.

Folks

When you look at our grand Old parties UPC and DP, you cannot help but cry. Whatever happened to them!! The DP of the yore did not tolerate nonsense. They could go toe to toe with the UPC youth wingers , more often the latter would be battered badly.
In 1980, although I was not yet of voting age,I followed what was going on.
I remember on nomination day, the DP candidate Victor Muhindo vanished without trace.
I later came to understand that the then UPC chairman Mr Patrick Olugo a Langi, had ordered his arrest ,sadly he consequently died. How he died is still a mystery. It was obvious that he'd win the Kasese  North.
DP youth wingers that included Matovu, Kawoya and a one Ngelese waited in vain, Muhindo had still not shown up.They became very agitated and very rowdy .I remember seeing them grabbing a one Steven Baluku who had been my geography at St Leo's Kyegobe and trying to force him into a waiting Peugeot 404. Baluku had quit teaching to work in some intelligence outfit that Amon Bazira headed. The DP youth wingers suspected that Baluku had something to do with the disappearance of Mr Muhindo the DP candidate.
Baluku survived that day because Amon Bazira and in the ensuing melee his pistol dropped causing the DP youth wingers to flee the scene.
After the death of Victor Muhondo was  confirmed, the irrate bakonjo joined hands with the very few UPM supporters who were mainly Rwandese, Bakiga etc. Kasese is your typical metropolitan town that has all tribes. Arabs, bakiga, batoro, Nunbians  We even had Acholi quarters.
I joined the kakuyege that saw Kiyonga win the only UPM seat to the chagrin of my muzee who never forgave me.
The UPC chairman Patrick Olugo was later assassinated in a certain bar called blue(something).
It was a single shot to the forehead. Today nobody knows who did it but whoever did, he was a superb sniper,
That lead to a lot of chaos, my Rwandese friends got harrased, tortured arrested , I lost my childhood friend father Mr Sempebwa , I lost my first love  Stella Nabunya after her mother was found next to Mr Sempabwa's body at a Nyamwamba river bank.
It was a very chaotic time.
