{UAH} NRM REBEL MPs: I, TOO, WOULD EAT HUMBLE PIE!!
If I am faced with making a decision between humiliation and starvation, I would choose the former. That is exactly what the NRM "rebel" MPs chose.
For years, they have been looked at as a voice of reason in the party, especially when it comes to serving the interests of the ordinary people. They were very vocal about the removal of both term and age limits. They have been vocal about the theft of public money and misuse of office by some government officials. They have also, on several occasions, exposed the intolerance in the party, especially with regards to having a view/position contrary to that one forced onto all party members.
With the nominations for party flag bearers for the 2021 elections just around the corner, these MPs have been faced with probably the greatest challenge to both their political and personal survival...their MP status being permanently taken away! These MPs know that they need the NRM to survive. If they are prevented from representing the party at the elections, it will be the end of their exposure and opportunity to make money as MPs. And if they contest as independents, they know that the chances of winning the election are similar to the chances a camel has to go through a needle's eye!
The reality of being out of parliament, and out of the good books of the NRM can be told by the likes of Vincent Kyamadidi or any person who has experienced it, especially if the only meaningful work experience you have is holding a political office. You will "eat" the little savings you have, if any, and then get forced to seek refuge and solace in your village. You would rather go to the village and pretend to be engaged in gainful farming than keep on the streets of Kampala, driving your car "endobo" style (to save on fuel) and wearing threadbare clothes. Back in the village, the stress will get too overwhelming as you run out of spending cash, cease to buy alcohol for the village drunks, and instead resort to hustling for drinks with them. Anyone who has run out of money and found himself seeking refuge in his/her village will tell you how it is a nasty experience! You will become material for village gossip. The village drunks will openly belittle you, especially if you are unfortunate to engage in an argument with any of them! Usually, the talk is along the lines of, "You used to think you were superior to us, but you are nothing! Look at you, shameless to come and drink our crude waragi with us!"
Well, the "rebel" MPs looked at two sides of the coin of life. 1) The life described above, or 2) Kissing ass and being allowed to contest as NRM flagbearers in the coming elections. This comes with a huge salary, alot of access to bribes, several allowances, opportunities for greater things (even being appointed as a minister) etc. They chose to kiss ass. Better to be humiliated than to starve. And the last laugh was from Kasule Lumumba who they had, on several occasions, tried to ridicule. She said that inasmuch as they have tabled their apology, they have not yet been forgiven!
If I was in their position, I would grovel, probably crawling to State House. I would have volunteered to empty the rubbish, clean the houses and unblock any blocked sewer. I would have also requested to polish Mzee's shoes for the rest of the days! Yes, I would have cut the largest slice of humble pie, happily chewed it and loudly swallowed it. I am not alone in my thinking, and I am sure I would not be the first. Sometimes it is the only way to survive. And president Museveni did give them a lengthy lecture on survival.
