{UAH} On this day 35 years ago a coup d' tat took place
By Edgar Muvunyi Tabaro
-- On this day 35 years ago a coup d' tat took place. My dad was caught in the mess at Golf Course while returning to his residence from a stroll to his old schoolmate and pal Late Henry Tungakwo then Deputy Minister for Labour and MP for Kabarole South who lived in the same neighbourhood of Kololo. He had walked there to alert him of the goings following a tip from an operative. The plotters were on Kitante Rd (now Yusuf Lule Rd) shooting indiscriminately. Dad soon joined two (then total strangers) David Ssepuuya (ex Editor in Chief- New Vision) and Late TK Mugooya (legendary Chief Inspector of Schools) in running for safety. Late Mugooya whose residence was on Golf Course Rd took them in for a week as they waited for the situation to "cool". For the next 6 months Kampala was divided between 5 warlords controlling different suburbs of Kampala. Driving from say Bugolobi to Namirembe, got you through 4 different armies in charge of roadblocks. Uganda was a candidate for peace operations. We have come along way. What lessons do we take from our past to shape the future?
