In the midst of unprecedented verbal, legislative, and physical attacks on America’s law enforcement officers, President Donald Trump has stood firm on his support of our honorable profession and the daily sacrifices we make for our communities.

Following years of neglect and outright contempt, this support has been refreshing and encouraging. President Trump has managed to balance his staunch backing of American law enforcement with a critical eye on needed areas of reform in modern law enforcement.

I was fortunate enough to sit in the same room with the President for a brutally raw and honest discussion with families of young men who lost their lives in encounters with law enforcement. It was emotional and sobering yet the President and Attorney General William Barr listened to each story, spoke with the families individually, and offered assistance and support where appropriate. After that I was honored to stand behind President Trump as he signed an Executive Order calling for law enforcement agencies to adopt several best practices that will assist us in serving our communities more efficiently and safely.

If there is any doubt that President Trump is working diligently and tirelessly to defend and support law enforcement while making our communities safer for all Americans, I offer the following data:

Support of law enforcement officers

Directed the Attorney General to develop a strategy to aggressively prosecute criminals who attack law enforcement.

Launched an evaluation to make sure grant programs prioritize the safety of our brave law enforcement officers.

Signed an executive order to provide law enforcement with surplus military equipment, helping our police officers protect themselves and their communities.

Since 2017, the Administration has sent more than $300 million in surplus Department of Defense equipment to law enforcement agencies across the nation.

Announced nearly $100 million in grant funding to help communities hire more law enforcement officers.

The Justice Department has already helped police departments hire more than 800 law enforcement officers since January 2017.

Signed the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act, improving law enforcement officers’ access to mental health services.

Advocated for and signed legislation permanently authorizing funds to support 9/11 first responders and their families.

Making our communities safer

Violent crime dropped in 2017 after spiking in the two years before President Trump took office.

Initial data shows violent crime decreased by 4 percent in the first half of 2018, including a nearly 7 percent decline in the murder rate.

Crime in the 30 largest American cities declined in 2018, with decreases in the rates of violent crime, murder, and overall crime.

Murder rates in particular dropped by 8 percent in 2018 in these cities.

Property crimes, like theft or burglary, decreased by 3 percent in 2017.

Targeting crime

Established a task force to help combat crime in communities across America.

Revitalized the Project Safe Neighborhoods program to help reduce violent crime.

Created the National Public Safety Partnership, an initiative with cities to reduce violent crime.

The Department of Justice launched a record number of prosecutions for violent crimes, gun crimes, drug crimes, and white collar crimes in 2018.

Resumed capital punishment of federal prisoners after a nearly two decade lapse.

Directed the Administration to focus more federal resources on dismantling transnational criminal organizations, like drug cartels.

Encouraged federal prosecutors to use the death penalty when possible in the fight against the trafficking of deadly drugs.

Signed legislation making it easier to target websites that enable sex trafficking and strengthened penalties for people who promote prostitution.

The Department of Justice is using all resources available to combat hate crimes and domestic terrorism.

As an American lawman, I put my life on the line for strangers, friends, and loved ones every single day. President Trump sees me and recognizes mine and so many other’s sacrifices. He puts his money where his mouth is and America is a better place because of it.
