The Untold Story of Ugandan Student who Died Mysteriously in Moscow
The body of a Ugandan student who died mysteriously under unclear circumstances while pursuing his studies in Moscow has been repatriated.
Isaac Wanderemah,22, was pursuing his dream career as an aeronautical engineering student at Moscow Aviation Institute in Russia from August 2018 until the fateful day of 4th June, 2020 when he was reported died after he allegedly fell from a 12th floor building.
According to Richard Wanderemah, Isaac's father, his son was perfectly well and had on the night of 3rd June spoken to his mother having represented Uganda and Africa at the African Day in Moscow.
"Circumstances of the death of my son are not yet because he was in Russia. He last talked to me on 30th May, but he talked to his mother on 3rd June up to 8pm in the evening and at 8am on 4th of June, he was pronounced died," Wanderemah said with teary eyes.
His family has been devastated by the mystery death of Isaac Wanderemah who has been regarded as an academic genius who excelled in all levels of his education. Isaac scored 5 aggregates in PLE and 8 in 8 in UCE from St Mary's College, Kisubi (SMACK) and later scored 20 points in UACE from the same school. He was admitted in Makerere University for a Bachelors' Degree in Electrical Engineering. Midway the course, Isaac abandoned the course for aeronautical engineering, his dream course after he obtained a scholarship from the Government of Russia through help of Professors in Makerere.
One month down the road, his mother, Sarah Wanderemah has not yet come to terms with the death of his 2nd born in a family of 3. For the first 4 weeks since she received the sad news, Sarah has been cold and not uttered a single word. She spends most of the time lying on her stomach, grieving her son who died in a foreign land shortly after she had spoken to him.
"Up to now, I don't know the circumstances under which he (Isaac) died. Rumors on social media reported that he fell from the 12th floor building, but an advanced report from Moscow showed that the death is unknown. We have asked for a comprehensive report but police from Moscow says it will follow the body. I don't know what killed my son, he had no health problem; he was a perfect sober student, because even on 30th May he represented Uganda and Africa at the African day in Moscow," Richard Wanderemah said.
Apparently, on the evening of 3rd June, Isaac's friends threw him a tea party to celebrate his performance at the African Day in Moscow. It was shortly after talking to his mother on phone that he (Isaac) told her that he was joining his colleagues for a tea party. Whatever happened thereafter remains a big mystery as the family suspects foul play in the death of their beloved son.
Wanderemah now uses the death of his son to caution governments to be security conscious of the students they provide scholarships in the outside countries, saying that his son cannot just die out of the blue without an evidenced report from the Government of Russia.
Repatriation Process
The death of Isaac was so depressing to the family, but it even turned out more devastating when the Government of Russia gave them a 10 day ultimatum to repatriate the body or have the remains cremated. With a meager resource envelope, the Wanderemah family resorted to friends to raise the funds to facilitate the treating of Isaac's body in Moscow and eventual repatriation. Every week, the family was expected to part with at least 300 dollars for 8 weeks to treat Isaac's body. The family then received a bill of over 11,000 dollars to repatriate his body. All in all the family needed about Shs50m.
Family receving the body of Isaac Wanderemah at Entebbe Airport on SundayWith the help of Dickson Ogwang, a Foreign Service Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Wanderemah saw light at the end of the tunnel and at last there was hope that they would have a glimpse of the remains of their son and grant him a decent burial. Ogwang who is also a family friend wrote to President Yoweri Museveni requesting for authorization to repatriate Isaac's body considering that the airport had been closed due to COVID-19. Ogwang also requested the President to cater for all the bills that the family may face in the process. The President granted all their requests.
"It is indeed a big miracle to have President Museveni. For us to have this body here in Uganda is a miracle because we had been given only 10 days to repatriate the body or have it buried in Moscow. At least, we can now breathe. I thank the Ministry of Foreign affairs, Embassy Mission of Uganda in Moscow and particularly President Museveni for miraculously supporting the repatriation," Wanderemah said as he along with relatives received the body at about 7pm on Sunday evening.
Richard Wanderemah (L) with Foreign Service Officer, Dickson OgwangForeign Service Officer, Dickson Ogwang said that the government of Uganda through its Embassy in Moscow has done a tremendous job from day one when Isaac Wanderemah died.
"Back here the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been working hard to ensure that the body of Isaac who is one of the most brilliant students is repatriated. Ambassador Patrick Mugoya who is the PS, Ministry of Foreign Affairs worked so hard in coordinating the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health to support the repatriation process of a Ugandan student who died in Moscow," Ogwang said.
"The government of Uganda has contributed enormously towards the repatriation process. In particular, I thank the President for fully meeting all the costs associated with the repatriation process after the family went to him for help."
According to the tentative programme, Isaac's body will on Wednesday lie at their home in Kireku, Bweyogerere and on Thursday, the body will be transported to their ancestral home in Bududa district where he will be laid to rest on Friday.
