Ruth Bader Ginsburg discharged from hospital after treatment for possible infection

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for a possible infection.

A spokesperson for the high court told CNBC on Wednesday that the associate justice returned home after being admitted to the hospital the day prior.

“She is home and doing well,” the spokesperson said.

On Tuesday, Ginsburg, 87, became ill with a fever and chills in Washington, D.C., and was transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for treatment of a possible infection.

"Justice Ginsburg was admitted to The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland early this morning for treatment of a possible infection. She was initially evaluated at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. last night after experiencing fever and chills," the court's statement read. "She underwent an endoscopic procedure at Johns Hopkins this afternoon to clean out a bile duct stent that was placed last August. The Justice is resting comfortably and will stay in the hospital for a few days to receive intravenous antibiotic treatment."

Ginsburg has battled a series of illnesses as a Supreme Court justice but has maintained her judicial duties. In September 2019, she had a malignant tumor removed. In 1999 and 2009, she was treated for colon cancer and pancreatic cancer, respectively.

In May, Ginsburg was hospitalized to receive non-surgical treatment for a gallbladder infection but still heard oral arguments from her hospital bed.
