{UAH} Dr Besigye’s Decision to Stay Out of Polls is Last Nail in Opposition Politics
As it was predicted by President Museveni that there wouldn't be opposition in Uganda in 2021, it seems to be coming true following Dr Kizza Besigye's decision to stay away from the elections.
Dr Besigye's decision comes after the retired colonel participating and losing presidential elections four times over a stretch of 20 years, arguably making him one of the most defeated presidential candidate in the world.
Although Dr Besigye has put up formidable challenges over the years, President Museveni has always defeated him with an average of at least 25 percent of the vote.
The four-time presidential candidate has always claimed to win but a Political Science don at Makerere University that prefers to keep his name away from the media says Dr Besigye has never had a credible claim for winning any of the four elections.
"I can't see why Besigye insists he has ever won any presidential election when his FDC party has hardly had more than 35 Members of Parliament out of 450. How? It is not possible".
The MUK don continues to say that the NRM has been strong and continues to be strong especially at the grassroots level advising the opposition to focus on building structures that translate into formidable votes.
"For example, the NRM won 95 LC5 Chairpersons out of 134 districts in Uganda. If you go to LC3s NRM won 1,378 Sub-Counties, and again won 6,495 Parishes making a percentage win of 87%. So, how do you think people will vote for Besigye when it comes to the Presidential elections?"
Considering the recently held countrywide youth elections that the NRM swept by over 80%, all opinion polls ahead of the 20202 Presidential polls give the NRM flagbearer, President Yoweri Museveni, a comfortable victory of above 75%.
Another factor points to Besigye's continued belligerence by promoting unnecessary commotion in the country which smirks of the irresponsible leadership that he has offered the opposition for over the two decades his been at the helm of opposition politics in Uganda. It is this approach that has given rise to a new culture of belligerent and violent politics hence the emergence of People Power/ NUP brand of politics that we are all too aware of.
Besigye's latest announcement to leave elective politics and focus on riots and protests clearly demonstrates how he has been the foremost factor in the curtailment and destruction of the opposition in Uganda.
What is left to be seen is how the new kid on the block, Bobi Wine, will fair. But all indications so far point to a case of jumping from the frying pan into the fire for opposition politics in Uganda.
