{UAH} Joel Ssenyonyi Admits NUP is Unable to Compete in a National Election
The National Unity Platform/People Power spokesperson Mr. Joel Ssenyonyi has admitted that his party is still young to put up a serious challenge in a national election.
Ssenyonyi was responding to questions about the party's failure to field candidates in the Special Interest Group elections that were swept by the NRM.
The NRM won most of the positions by up to 84% of the available seats. Independent candidates who are usually NRM-leaning came third with about 13% while the rest of the parties including NUP, FDC, DP and UP shared a paltry 3%.
Explaining the failure to field candidates, Ssenyonyi said that NUP does not field candidates beyond the scatters of Kampala because the party lacks political structures.
"I must admit we were not able to field candidates ourselves [NUP] everywhere…..we were out resourced and not able to give our candidates stamps, transport and all that", said Joel Ssenyonyi. He was appearing on the Media Round Table show on NBS TV.
Mr. Don Wanyama the Presidential Press Secretary, who also featured on the show wondered how a party vying for government leadership could fail to field candidates, even on a voluntary basis, in Kampala where NUP has consistently claimed to have absolute dominance.
Mr. Ssenyony's excuse was that the NUP party had been in existence for only two weeks so they didn't have enough time to establish themselves within the political structures.
However, the fact remains that NUP metamorphosed from the People Power movement, which has been on the political scene for over 3 years, and its leadership has continuously termed the pressure group as a "nationwide mass movement". In fact, NUP retains all the People Power branding and paraphernalia, which is another blunder, hence it is deceitful to try to claim to be new or not having enough time.
"Ugandans are left to wonder how people power, now NUP, who have failed to build structures in the last 3 years will be able to build viable political structures in the next 4 months before the January 2021 elections," said Don Wanyama.
It should be recalled that on Tuesday, 18th August 2020, Ssenyonyi, also aspiring MP for Nakawa West, while appearing on NBS was blatantly chest-thumping and declared a "landslide victory" for the NUP in the then-forthcoming elections for the youth, PWDs and elders. This premature declaration has since then been turned on its head as NUP was thoroughly routed and is now left licking its wounds.
Results from the Electoral Commission in the just concluded Village Council elections show a landslide victory for the NRM party with a phenomenal 84%, 86% and 79% victory for Persons with Disability (PWDs), Elderly Persons and Youth respectively.
For the previously erroneous assertion that NUP and Bobi command majority support in Kampala, Mr. Wanyama pressed Mr. Ssenyonyi to explain how the NRM managed to beat NUP by more than tenfold in Kampala. Mr. Ssenyonyi was left dumbstruck and resorted to engaging in a shouting session.
The results from the Village Council elections leave the opposition, particularly NUP, absolutely exposed and their supporters greatly demoralized. The reality is now sinking into the general populace that NUP (and the opposition generally) are nothing more but a soap bubble that inevitably bursts and withers away. All odds only point towards a resounding and landslide victory for the NRM and its Presidential candidate, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in the upcoming General Elections.
