{UAH} Former NUP members to run to court to challenge Bobi Wine leadership
Former members of the National Unity Party (NUP) through their lawyers have resolved to run to courts of law protesting the transfer of the party leadership and ownership to Kyandondo East Member of Parliament, Robert Kyagulayi alias Bobi Wine.
The complainants last month petitioned the Electoral Commission claiming that the transfer of the party and change of party members was illegal.
The petitioners also accused Bobi Wine of changing the party name from National Unity Reconciliation of Development Party to NUP without consulting the former members and following its constitution.
Bobi Wine, 38, declared his interest to challenge president Museveni, 75, who is seeking to extend his rule to fourth decade.
Addressing a conference in Kampala Friday morning, the petitioners through their lawyer, Mr James Byamukama, said that they have decided to run to court after the EC failed to conduct a dialogue between Bobi Wine and the aggrieved party.
"We raised a petition to turn EC complaints about the illegalities and unfairness against us the aggrieved members. Unfortunately, it is close to two weeks but the EC has opted to watch in silence the illegalities that are going on despite their mandate to supervise parties," Byamukama said.
He said that they have decided to take the EC, Attorney General and current NUP members to court where they hope to find justice.
When contacted, the acting EC Spokesperson, Paul Bukenya did not pick our repeated phone calls.
NUP spokesperson, Joel Ssenyonyi said that they were ready to meet the petitioners in court.
"Those who are claiming to be former members are not even registered in the party registrar. The documents they are presenting were forged and they do not even have party cards. We wish them the best," Mr Ssenyonyi said.
