{UAH} IS THIS THE END OF PEOPLE POWER MOVT??

By Mulengera Reporters

While appearing on NBS' Next Radio on Saturday for a political talk show, Dr. Stella Nyanzi (incoming Kampala Woman MP) insisted she had a right to benefit from the People Power momentum because she and many others from other parties had sacrificed a lot to build the same into a very formidable political movement. She said she wasn't going to accept the dishonesty of being told that she must denounce FDC and become NUP member first before being allowed to enjoy the PP support to replace Nabillah Nagayi as the next Woman MP for Kampala. "You told us from day one it was okay to be in PP where everyone was welcome and that we didn't have to leave our parties," Nyanzi said while directing her concerns to PP lawyer Shamim Malende who she appeared with for the Saturday debate.

Leveraging on her oratory skills, Nyanzi insisted there was nothing wrong carrying the FDC flag while continuing to profess adherence to People Power since it's not a party. Malende maintained that political anonymity/ambiguity wasn't going to be tolerated anymore now that what previously existed as PP had evolved into a political party called NUP. The following day Sunday, Malende drove to Magere where she had a meeting with Bobi Wine whom she urged to vehemently come out and clarify openly to overcome this confusion.

BOBI WINE ERUPTS

So, this Monday morning as he received fellow MPs and incumbent Mayors who denounced their membership to NRM, DP and SDP to profess NUP membership, Bobi Wine sounded a warning while reminding fellow leaders of the futility of trying to eat and keep one's cake at the same time. A clearly animated Bobi Wine made it clear there is no way anyone is going to benefit from the People Power momentum without first becoming a member of National Unity Platform (NUP). He advised everyone to secure themselves a membership card that is currently selling at just Shs1,000.

He explained that those who say they are PP and yet they don't belong to NUP are going to face it rough because the laws of Uganda don't permit such political anonymity enabling anyone to belong to two political parties at the same time. "You are either NUP or something else but you can simply not be both," Bobi Wine declared perhaps not realizing the extent to which such (taking-no-prisoners) statements will most likely alienate him from many longtime allies and political partners.

Taken literally, Kyagulanyi's Monday pronouncement simply means the likes of Abed Bwanika and Michael Mabikke aren't going to be able to continue professing PP and riding on its momentum to campaign for any political positions without first denouncing PDP and SDP (the respective parties the two men head). Especially Michael Mabikke must be much bruised and feeling agitated because of the dent Kyagulanyi has this morning occasioned onto his obscure SDP party by signing away his National Chairman Ronald Balimwezo who is also the Nakawa Mayor.

Renowned political pundit Charles Rwomushana says all this insistence prioritizing NUP party-building (as opposed to merely galvanizing countrywide support for the broader anti-NRM struggle) is proof that Kyagulanyi now realizes he stands no chance to become President through the 2021 ballot and is now concentrating on how his NUP can produce the next LoP while dominating all the accountability committees of Parliament. "He has invested a lot of personal money and effort which makes it legitimate for him to strategize on how to recover his investment. He is looking at the IPOD money and the other finances coming under LoP and EC to financially replenish himself after 2021 because he can't succeed again as a musician as young boys like John Black have now claimed that space," Rwomushana says insisting Kyagulanyi is now targeting number 2 position trailing behind Museveni's NRM.

NOT ONLY MABIKKE

The Kyagulanyi demand that one must first profess NUP before being permitted to benefit under the PP momentum is going to complicate things for many people and not just Mabikke and Abed Bwanika. It simply means even the likes of Muwanga Kivumbi, Medard Segona, Mathias Mpuuga, Florence Namayanja, Matia Lwanga Bwanika, Lulume Bayiga, Nsereko Wakayima, Sam Lubega Mukaku, Betty Nambooze, George Kagimu, Bakaluba Mukasa, Lulume Bayiga, Eugenia Nasolo, Kenneth Paul Kakande, Suleiman Kidandala, Eddie Yawe and others will have to first denounce their DP membership and accept to become NUP flag bearers to prevent Kyagulanyi from fighting them in the 2021 general elections.

Even the likes of Paul Mwiru will have to first denounce Mugisha Muntu's ANT and become card-bearing NUP members for them to benefit from the Kyagulanyi/PP momentum. Kyagulanyi, clearly determined to take no prisoners in his approach, has used his address this Monday morning at Kamwokya to urge them to emulate those who have defected today before it becomes too late. He says it's not about him being hard on anybody but it's the laws of Uganda that prohibit membership to two political parties or organizations.

At the same Kamwokya event Bobi Wine has called on his supporters across the country to begin active defiance against the Coronavirus measures and restrictions that President Museveni proclaimed into existence since March. He enumerated Jane Ruth Aceng, VP Sekandi, Evelyn Anite, Benny Bugembe Namugwanya and Mike Mukula as some of the big-name NRM leaders who have openly been flouting public gatherings-related restrictions. "It's time we begin disregarding all those restrictions and let's start now and whoever arrests or questions you as to why you aren't complying with the same, tell them it's President Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu who directed us to and then we see what they can do to you," said Kyagulanyi who believes once permitted, he can use public rallies to expand his momentum (amasanyalaze) to galvanize support in other Ugandan townships outside Buganda region.
