Jacob Blake had a knife in his car when he was shot by police, DOJ says

Jacob Blake had a knife inside his vehicle when he was shot seven times by a Wisconsin police officer as he opened the SUV’s door, authorities revealed Wednesday.

The discovery of the weapon, found on the driver’s side floorboard of Blake’s SUV, was announced by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, who is investigating the Sunday shooting in Kenosha that has ignited deadly protests in the city.

Officials also said Blake copped to having the knife, but it’s unclear exactly when he made the admission.

The shooting unfolded after cops responded to a call from a woman who said her boyfriend showed up at her house, though he wasn’t supposed to be there.

When police moved to arrest Blake, the confrontation began, leading police to first deploy a taser that was not effective, officials said.

Blake then walked around his vehicle toward the driver’s side door as two cops trailed him with weapons drawn, video of the shooting shows.

One of the officers — identified Wednesday as Rusten Sheskey, then grabs Blake by his shirt after he opens the car door and fires seven bullets into Blake’s back.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul declined to elaborate on preliminary details or on when the knife was recovered.

In the press release issued by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, they say Blake’s knife admission was made “during the investigation following the initial incident.”

A reporter asked Kaul if that meant Blake said he had the weapon after the tasing attempt, but the AG would not answer.

“As the release stated, he acknowledged he had a knife in his possession at some point,” Kaul said.

All the offices involved Sunday have been placed on administrative leave.

Officials also noted Wednesday that the Kenosha Police Department does not have body cameras.
