{UAH} MANY UGANDANS IN THE DISAPORA ARE IGNORANT!

By Edris Kiggundu

This is not an insult. It is just my observation.

Over the years, I have realised that many Ugandans in the diaspora (CERTAINLY NOT ALL) are some of the most ignorant and gullible lot when it comes to happenings in their home country.

I have been lucky to travel to quite a number of "outside" countries thanks to journalism.

But on all these occasions, I have tried to avoid getting into any sort of argument about happenings at home with people whose political views are so narrow and extreme and whose minds are consumed by conspiracy theories about everything and anything.

They express a lot of bitterness.

They live in some of the most technologically advanced countries but they can't do basic research about many of the things they claim to be knowledgeable about.

To most of them, everything is either black or white. There are no grey areas. There is no middle position.

Social Media platforms have become their most potent weapon. They sit back, type and spew their ill-informed opinions, shamelessly.

Many tend to be very paranoid about so many things, about people from home. They feel like everyone and everything is against them, that no one wishes them well, that people are envious of their achievements.

Well, I have not lived outside Uganda longer than two months, but I am curious to know what the diaspora does to the minds of the people.

Like I said at the beginning, not all Ugandans in the diaspora behave this way.

I personally know a number of well informed, reasonable Ugandans who still live outside this country. Friends like Moses Khisa, Ssebuliba Luyirika, Abbey Kibirige Semuwemba, Enock Mayanja Kiyaga and a number of others.

These, however, are the exceptions.
