Pro-Trump Democratic speaker was more effective than all those pro-Biden Republicans

The Republican National Convention’s lone cross-party speaker Monday evening accomplished more in one speech than all the Democratic National Convention’s Republican guests combined.

Not only is Democratic Georgia State Rep. Vernon Jones’s address likely to be more memorable because of his use of exceptionally incendiary rhetoric, but he is also likely to generate more news coverage than any of the Democratic convention’s GOP speakers by virtue of the fact that he is a black Democrat who supports President Trump. Remember, even before his address on the first night of the 2020 Republican National Convention, Jones was being asked incredibly unprofessional questions by members of the press, including whether his support for the incumbent president is contingent on a cash payout.

“The Democratic Party does not want black people to leave their mental plantation,” the Georgia state representative said Monday evening. “We’ve been forced to be there for decades and generations.”

He added, “But I have news for Joe Biden: We are free. We are free people with free minds. And I am part of a large and growing segment of the black community who are independent thinkers, and we believe that Donald Trump is the president that America needs to lead us forward.”

Jones continued, taking more shots at the 2020 Democratic nominee.

“This is no time for sleeping in the basement,” Jones said, referring to the Biden campaign’s strategy of hiding its candidate away from cameras and media. “Joe Biden has had 47 years to produce results. But he’s been all talk and no action — just like so many of the Democrats who’ve been making promises to the black voters for decades. We’ve been their captive audience.”

He added, “When President Trump sought to earn the black vote, the Democratic Party leaders went crazy! Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer literally started wearing kente cloths around the U.S. Capitol! As if pandering were enough to keep us satisfied!”

Jones then went on to praise the Trump administration for its efforts to take on criminal justice reform and school choice.

“Now, you know when I made the public announcement of my support for President Trump, all hell broke loose,” said Jones. “I was threatened, called an embarrassment, and asked to resign by my party. Unfortunately, that’s consistent with the Democratic Party and how they view independent-thinking black men and women.”

He added, “But I’m here to tell you that black voices are becoming more woke and louder than ever.”

Now, compare all of this to the cross-party addresses featured last week at the Democratic National Convention. I dare you to recite any of former Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s prepared remarks from memory. Hell, I am willing to bet you don’t even remember that New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, businesswoman Meg Whitman, and former New York Rep. Susan Molinari spoke last week at the Democratic gathering, let alone what they said.

Love it or hate it, Jones’s speech Monday evening is almost certainly going to go a lot further than anything said by a Republican last week at the Democratic convention. And in Trump’s world, where all publicity is good publicity, that is unquestionably a win.
