JOSEPH MAYANJA aka CHAMELEON SHOULD STAND IN MITYANA NORTH
Mr Joseph Mayanja, aka Jose Chameleon has fronted himself as an aspirant for the Kampala Lord Mayor position. Needless to mention is the fact that it is within his rights to choose which elective position to vie for. However, in my view, Mr Mayanja stands slim chances of being elected to that position because of the popularity of the incumbent who has also been nominated by his party to contest again.
Unfortunately, the complexities of the KCCA top job do not favour Mr Mayanja despite his celebrity status. The incumbent has consistently demonstrated that he can stand with the people of Kampala under all circumstances and they trust that this will continue.
On the hand, Mr Mayanja seems to be bent on riding on his celebrity status to propel him to the office of Lord Mayor. Unfortunately for Mr Mayanja, Kampala voter's are very enlightened, they have their own demands and they have demonstrated in the past that they vote for the person that they think will represent their interests better. I am not suggesting in anyway that Mr Mayanja cannot do that, but I am rather saying that the incumbent is seen to be in a better position to deliver on the voters' demands.
Having mentioned that, it would be foolhardy for me to think that Mr Mayanja's political career has been buried. Not at all!
Mr Mayanja has his ancestry in Mityana South where his parents still have a strong presence. At a risk of being seen to be suggesting that Mityana South voters are gullible, I can see the celebrity in Mr Mayanja being voted overwhelmingly as their area MP replacing Mr Kiwanda. He only needs to shed his chameleon characteristics during this political season and maintain consistency as an NUP member and a firm believer in Mr Kyagulanyi's message.
This approach is would deliver a win-win outcome for both Mr Mayanja and Mr Kyagulanyi. Mr Mayanja would have a leg in Parliament while Mr Kyagulanyi would avoid a potential train smash in case NUP did not make Mr Mayanja the NUP flag bearer for the position of Lord Mayor of Kampala. Train smash because the music industry is watching that decision very keenly and it could turn out as the moment that 'exonerates' Kenzo.
In the bigger scheme of things the opposition would claim an NRM seat and shut up an NRM bigwig in Hon. Kiwanda.
