By Moses Bukenya

As a youth, having been a voluntary player in the NRM structures (Nakawa NRM sub district) and as a leader of a vibrant mobile taskforce, I was deluded to think that my support had anything to do with NRM keeping a firm grip on power.

I was later to learn the hard way that it was more to do with the means that brought them into power than our support and political mobilisation. No wonder, our structures were only relevant during campaigns and played no role in National governance despite being the party in power.

It's more to do with the military might than the political support. This military presence is one of the reasons it's next to impossible for any political party to build a sound structural presence in the Country. They must however exist in order to legitimise the NRM government by taking a share of the seats and donor money preserved for this purpose.
