{UAH} SENYONYI IS FED UP OF DPS WHO JOINED NUP!

By Gilbert Mwesigye

On Sunday, the PP/NUP Electoral Commission convened a meeting for all aspirants wishing to carry the PP/NUP flag for all elective positions in Nakawa West. Held at Fred Nyanzi Sentamu's Building in Kamwokya, the meeting attracted close to 150 PP/NUP leaders and political aspirants from Nakawa West. The key conveners were Electoral Commissioners JM Sebuwufu Kiyimba and Jeremiah Kaaya Mwanje who closely worked with Innocent Tegusulwa (of the Toli Mwavu fame).  Tegusulwa is now the PP/NUP EC Registrar in charge of internal party electoral processes for Kampala district.

Kenneth Paul Kakande (formerly of DP Block) and Joel Senyonyi, who are fighting for the NUP flag for Nakawa West MP slot, were also part of the meeting and were both given chance to speak. Kakande was the first to speak and being an orator from UYD, he made a moving speech causing the audience to give a standing ovation every time he delivered a point; a thing that greatly discomforted Senyonyi who was to speak later. "I have heard many people calling us new entrants from elsewhere coming to take advantage of the Kyagulanyi wave but that is totally false and untrue. It shows ungratefulness and how forgetful some people can be," Kakande said. "I will refer to one of the popular Kampala songs. In that song Jose Chameleon asks baliwa abaakuba enkebete and I'm here to say I'm one of them. I have actually been part of this thing long before some people got the high-flying positions they now hold. I began with Bobi Wine in Kyadondo before he even became an MP to have any clear political future.  I have been through many of his struggles long before some of our current big men even joined PP to hold the Secretariat [salaried] jobs they currently occupy."

All this Kakande rhetoric was a scornful polite reference to Joel Senyonyi who gainfully holds the position of Spokesperson for PP/NUP. Being the demagogue he is, Kakande made his submission in flawless Luganda and by the time he finished his speech, the entire audience was standing up singing his name. His speech was repeatedly interrupted by supportive applause from the audience, making Mr. Joel Senyonyi even more uncomfortable. Some in the audience kept chanting/: "He was earning salary at NTV as veterans like yourself where eating teargas in Museveni's prisons; there is no place in this country that you haven't been to fighting for freedom."

When Senyonyi's turn came, the flamboyant journalist from Nakasongora was emotionally so broken and struggled to compose himself. Sources at the meeting say that an overwhelmed Senyonyi made many derogatory remarks including furiously asking: "Lwaki temuddayo mu bubiina bwamwe bu DP? Muyitiride okutujooga atenga mwatusanga tuli mumirembe mu Kintu kyaffe [why don't you return to your small parties like DP? Your familiarity is becoming too much yet you found us in our thing]." There was a lot of heckling from the audience that was clearly pro-Kakande that Senyonyi struggled to finish his submission. "You are excellent as a spokesperson but the truth is you aren't on the ground. We live in Nakawa but we don't feel you," one of the veteran DP mobilizers (now newly in NUP) shouted from the audience.

The meeting ended in near acrimony with the conveners calling for calm while promising to prepare their final report guiding the NUP Executive Committee

BACK TO NAKAWA WEST SAGA

Sources have intimated to Mulengera News that the Sunday meeting was preceded by an internal PP/NUP intelligence report that indicated much as he was very popular nationally as Spokesperson, Senyonyi will actually be hard brand to sell to the Nakawa West voters because he actually isn't on the ground (whatever that means). The report rated Kakande as the best PP/NUP can front for the Seat (against NRM's well-funded Margaret Zziwa) since it can't be Eng Ronald Balimwezo anymore having reluctantly relocated to Nakawa East that many PP/NUP aspirants fear because they consider the NRM very strong there with former Minister Fred Ruhindi making a major comeback against the indomitable FDC incumbent Mike Kabaziguruka.

This preliminary report findings greatly angered Senyonyi supporters in the Kamwokya Secretariat who started accusing Mukaku the veteran fighter from Mawokota of all sorts of things. They went as far ringing Mr. Wine claiming that Mukaku Lubega was using his position on the EC (as Vice Chairman) to ensure that all Mr. Wine loyalists are sidelined and denied the flag bearership in favor of his old friends from DP and UYD. Mukaku was specifically accused of being the invisible hand propping up the candidature of Kakande with whom they co-founded UYD in 1995. Mukaku became national Speaker for UYD as Kakande deputized Group President Leander Komaketch (who replaced Joseph Luzige who drowned into the NRM groceries). "He [Mukaku] is actually the man bull dozing everyone in the EC to impose Kakande on Nakawa while sacrificing Joel Senyonyi. Just imagine Principal how can we convince the country that Joel isn't good enough to become NUP flag bearer for an MP position? That will be betrayal to him for the risk he took resigning his good job at NTV to join the PP struggle when it was in its infancy," Mr. Wine was repeatedly told.

Actually after the Sunday meeting, a tearful Joel Senyonyi picked his phone and cried out to Mr. Wine. He complained there was a ploy by guys from DP Block to crowd out everybody and ensure DP veterans benefit from the PP/NUP momentum more than guys like him who intend to loyally serve Mr. Wine because they have no other political home. This is the line Turkey-based blogger Fred Kajubi Lumbuye (understood to be a hatchet man for Mr. Wine) has been parroting in his Facebook live broadcasts aimed at demonizing the workaholic and incorruptible Mukaku and other DP Block adherents.

Senyonyi's people repeatedly told Mr. Wine the biggest problem now was that the DP Block adherents were having the last word in EC meetings through Mukaku who was accused of bulldozing others during EC meetings. That is how Mukaku's goose was cooked leaving Mr. Wine with no option but to dramatically fire him out replacing him with music producer Tony Hauls (of all people) who was preferred majorly for his loyalty to the infallible politician from Magere. Matters regarding the DP Bloc suspicion were further worsened by the fact that JM Sebuwufu and Kaaya Mwanje who convened the Sunday meeting, that became a waterloo of sorts for Senyonyi, are 100% DP by background just like the much tormented Mukaku himself.

There are fears in the coming days and weeks, there will be plenty of effort aimed at purging DP Block adherents who the Mr. Wine core group members fear for being politically very sophisticated and very good at counter scheming because they have been at the game for decades. Mulengera News understands that there is already plenty of discomfort among many DP Block adherents that their preferred candidates might in the end walk away with nothing or very little. In Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality there are rumors that the Kyagulanyi core group prefers David Serukenya ahead of incumbent MP Sempala Kigozi Sajjalyabene of DP Block-and there are many constituencies where DP Block adherents are faced with similar predicament and uncertainty. This uncertainty has actually prompted some DP Block adherents now in NUP to quietly reach out to Mao's DP offering olive branch on condition that City House can allow them back and hand them the DP flag in their respective constituencies.
