{UAH} Campaigns start for FDC flag bearer
The Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has set dates for the party delegates conference to elect its presidential flag bearer for the 2021 elections.
The campaigns for candidates vying for the position will start today in East Buganda Sub-region.
According to the tentative campaign programme for the party's presidential bearer, which Daily Monitor has seen, FDC will convene its delegates conference on October 6 at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi near Kampala and at district offices to elect the flag bearer.
Two candidates; the party president, Mr Patrick Amuriat, and the national chairperson, Mr Wasswa Biriggwa; will be holding joint campaigns to canvass for votes.
The programme shows that the two candidates will today meet the delegates in East Buganda area (Mukono, Kayunga, Buvuma and Buikwe) in Lugazi, Buikwe District.
Tomorrow, the candidates will head to Busoga to meet delegates from Kamuli and Buyende in Kamuli District.
The campaigns, which will last 17 days, will end on September 31 in Kampala Metropolitan area, which comprises Makindye, Central, Rubaga, Kawempe and Nakawa divisions.
The party has set October 3 as the date for the presidential flag bearer debate at the party headquarters before the delegates conference.
The FDC electoral commission secretary, Mr Augustine Ojobile, confirmed the campaign programme.
Some party officials had earlier proposed that the delegates should choose the right candidate after every campaign meeting per region, which would see the candidate with the highest number of votes announced the winner.
But party spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda said the national executive committee rejected the proposal because it would cause excitement and confusion.
He said the party decided to hold the delegates conference on the same date but in various districts due to Covid-19 restrictions that bar crowds.
This means the delegates from central region will meet at the party headquarters while other delegates will meet at their respective district offices to elect the party flag bearer.
