{UAH} Divisions in NUP as more aspirants protest ‘corrupt’ vetting process

Kyadondo East legislator and presidential hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine's National Unity Platform (NUP) is currently divided, as more aspirants come out to protest the 'corrupt' vetting process.

Early this month, NUP electoral commission led by Mercy Walukamba kicked off their vetting process, where they intended to 'hand-pick' party flag bearers for different positions ahead of the forthcoming 2021 general election.

A provisional list of the successful candidates at various local government positions for Kampala, Wakiso, and Makindye was released early this week in a statement that has since attracted mixed reactions.

According to one of the aggrieved candidates who spoke to Nile Post on grounds of anonymity, some aspirants, who are close friends with NUP leadership are being favored over others.

"I don't want to be quoted but I have been pushed away. I have been denied a card for someone who joined People Power in July," the aspirant told Nile Post, adding;

"The reason they are giving me is that he has a lot of support on the ground but I know that he is a colleague to Joel Ssenyonyi."

Another candidate who spoke to us said, "I want to tentatively make it clear to the public because I have failed to get justice in the internal structures. They have refused to give me clear reasons yet I have mobilizing youth since last year. They have not been fair to me."

Allen Nakiku, who was also dropped said that they told her to appeal and she did but," there has not been any communication since."

Several other contests stormed the party offices in Kamwokya on Monday afternoon seeking answers to why they were dropped.

The Nile Post has independently learnt that NUP leadership has instituted a committee to resolve the several conflicts that have come up due to the vetting process.

This reporter contacted NUP EC Chairperson Mercy Walukamba but she sent us to Joel Ssenyonyi, who is the spokesperson of the party.

Ssenyonyi was however not available to comment on the matter as our messages and calls were not replied to.

NUP Secretary-General, David Lewis Lubongoya had however told journalists earlier that they had kicked off the processes to address the rising discontentment in the party.
