{UAH} GEN. MUNTU AND POA TO FACE OFF AGAIN
GEN. MUNTU AND POA TO FACE OFF AGAIN
Gen. Muntu joined Museveni's Bush War at the age of 23 straight from Makerere University in 1981. Upon taking power, he served as Director of Military Intelligence, 5th Division Commander, Chief Political Commissar (CPC) and Army Commander for close to ten years. Upon retirement, he served as a representative to the East African Legislature before he became a founding member of the FDC. His bid to become the FDC party President suffered a set back when he was twice defeated by Dr. Besigye. However in 2012, when Dr. Besigye resigned from office, Gen. Muntu was elected the party President after defeating Nathan Nandala Mafabi. In 2017, Muntu lost the FDC Presidency to Eng. Patrick Oboth Amuriat.
Eng. POA traces his political journey from his student days at Makerere University where he actively campaigned for the current DP President General, Nobert Mao for the Guild Presidency against then LT. Noble Mayombo. The race was so violently tight that three students were shot dead while others, including the present Deputy Speaker, Jacob Oulanya were seriously maimed by security forces. POA actively campaigned for Dr. Paul Ssemogerere's presidential bid in 1996. He later became the M.P for Kumi Municipality. In 2017 he contested for the Presidency of the FDC against the incumbent Gen. Muntu.
The said 2017 party polls were polarised along political ideology with Gen. Muntu advocating for building strong party structures while POA was for the mobilisation of the masses for action dubbed Defiance. In his message POA stated;
"I bring to this race 25 solid years of political activism; I bring new energy that is currently lacking in the party. And I belong to the ideology of defiance."
At the end of the day, the National Delegates assembly elected POA who won with 641 votes against Gen. Muntu's 463.
After the polls, Gen. Muntu threatened to make a personal pronouncement that "would not go down well with sections of the party." POA laboured to lure back Gen. Muntu into the fold with no success. Gen. Muntu embarked on the so-called nationwide consultation before he announced that he was quitting the FDC in September 2018. In March 2019 he founded the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) which was formally launched in May 2019. In June 2020, the ANT approved his unopposed candidature for the presidential flag bearer ship in the forthcoming national presidential election. Already, a number of members of the FDC including three M.Ps have left to join the ANT.
If POA succeeds in being elected the FDC flag bearer, he will definitely meet with Gen. Muntu on the same ballot paper for the Presidency of Uganda. It would be interesting to see how the two will perform against each other. Already POA is publicly boasting that he defeated a former Army Commander, Gen. Muntu in the 2017 party primaries.
