INCREASING RATE OF SUICIDES IN UGANDA INDICATES YOUTH AT GRAVE RISK OF DRUG ABUSE
A number of recent national surveys have helped shed light on the relationship between drug abuse and suicidal behavior.
Police recently arrested a one Robert Kakooza Kwesiga alias Sanya Tim, a resident of Kasokoso Kireka in Kira municipality in Wakiso District who was under the influence of marijuana for attempting to set himself ablaze in the People Power offices.
In the same week a notorious drug addict Mutwahilu Bogere Wasswa, the chairman of Bweyogerere, Bukasa stage in old taxi park was similarly arrested for attempted suicide.
According to Dr. David Basangwa, the executive director at Butabika Hospital, review of minimum-age laws and suicides among youths age 18 to 28 found that lower minimum-age was associated with higher youth suicide rates.
He further attributes the habit to the bad celebrity come politician role models. Adding that role models help youths become the person they want to be and inspire them to make a difference in society.
Unfortunately youths have been made to believe that when one smokes marijuana he will automatically become an MP and very famous just like singer come politician Bobi Wine. There by influenced and encouraged to be the person they admire.
In studies that examine risk factors among people who have completed suicide, substance use and abuse occurs more frequently among youth and adults, compared to older persons.
Mwambutsya Ndebesa the Makerere University political history don professor says that as Ugandans plan to cast their vote in the 2021 election, they should vote wisely with deep understanding and not vote Presidential candidates with criminal background who will impact evil practices to their children.
