{UAH} What the departure of #Basajjamivule and other activists from NUP to NRM means

By Lineaker Kigunddu

In Uganda's history, its not the first time that politicians have crossed from the opposition to the rulling party. In the 60s, Hon #Bail_Batalingaya the DP secretary General who also doubled as the leader of opposition in the 1st parliament crossed to the UPC government. He even went ahead to jail his former DP Boss Benedicto Kiwanuka using his powers as the Minister of Internal affairs. Many others even in this era have crossed to NRM forexample Minister Nakiwala Kiyinji was a DP Member, Hon Sam Kutesa was a DP member, etc , etc therefore the crossing of Basajjamivule is not new because many are actually still crossing to NRM.

As per Uganda's Politics today, we all agree that Bobi Wine and his NUP/People Power are the main opposition contenders come the 2021 elections. This makes them vulnerable to shoplifting by NRM. Being in power gives NRM and Museveni an upper hand when it comes to scooping out opposition activists to bring about panic and disorganization in the opposition. Many people you see in the opposition are there to use the platform to put their buy out close prices high as they cross to NRM. With NRM having all the resources to spend, it becomes so easy for the faint hearted to cross over after pocketing envelopes and promised expensive cars and may be positions of authority. The opposition is seen by many as a weighing scale to name the right price for one for cross to the ruling party.

As I have always said, it may not be so easy to uproot an empire that has been standing for over 3 decades by taking part in an election they have organised. Besides voting rigging and all sorts of ballot stuffing, the NRM is in charge of the finances ( Bank of Uganda, all loans& grants from foreign banks, well wishers, the revenue collected, etc). Some of these finances are spent on buying out opposition activists, bribing voters, bribing returning officers and polling agents. And in some areas, the opposition also lucks the resources to sponsor their agents to protect their votes on polling stations. With no opposition watchman, the NRM takes the advantage and results always come out in their favour. On top of the finances, the NRM is in charge of the security (Police, army, intelligence officers) these all work in their favour. Its the reason why you see police dispersing opposition big crowds not to allow them listen to their candidates and also sorrounding media stations to block them from speaking.

None of us knows what God is planning ahead. Who knew Museveni would capture power from the Obote in just 5 years. However, we cannot use Museveni as the yard stick to determine Kyagulanyi's fate. May be Museveni was lucky that he wasn't betrayed by many of his soldiers and informers while in the bush. For Kyagulanyi's case, he should be sure that any one around him can easily cross to NRM. Money makes people do the impossible. Also he should be aware that many people around him are actually state sponsored agents who are there to eavesdrop any form of highly classified information.

Finally, I wouldn't want to judge Basajjamivule's decession of crossing to NRM because that is something that any one can do whether forcefully , willingly or out of temptation.
