{UAH} CAN I REPRESENT MY BUDDY IN COURT?
CAN I REPRESENT MY BUDDY IN COURT?
Smart Gook Akanga has been watching lawyer tv shows for ore than 10 years. He watched and even practiced in front of the mirror how to act like those lawyers in 'suits'. He even speaks like that lawyer in the old show 'Boston Legal". So he's sure there is no lawyer who can now 'out-argue' him Since Semuwemba is in now in trouble with the law. He wants to know if he can represent him.
WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?
According to the law, (The Advocates Act), no one is allowed to act as a lawyer for another person unless that person has followed all the steps necessary to become a lawyer. (Going to law school, getting a qualification for legal practice, etc)
The reason it is this way is because the Semuwemba would be at risk of getting sentenced because of the mistakes Smart Gook makes in representing him because of either ignorance or lack of lawyering skills.
Therefore only lawyers can go to court for someone else under the law. However, the law still allows you to represent yourself. This is called 'Self representation.
