{UAH} EC receives Shs 15 billion for political parties

The Electoral Commission(EC) has received Shs 15 billion from government to facilitate political parties in the country, the EC chairperson, Simon Byabakama said on Wednesday.

Recently, political parties asked the commission to release their funds ahead of the 2021 election.

Under the Political Parties and Organisations Act, political parties with representation in parliament are entitled to some money to support their activities.

However, this money has not been released since the beginning of the year and yet it was budgeted for.

The money is also meant to cover the political parties' administrative costs at both national and district offices.

Speaking to the media, Byabakama said the commission received the money and it is now set to distribute it accordingly.

"We have received the money from the ministry of finance that is meant for funding political parties as required under the law amounting to Shs 15 billion. We are already in the process of ensuring that it goes to the political parties to facilitate their activities," he said.

He cited one of the challenges the commission is likely to face in the distribution of the money given the fact that some MPs crossed from one party to another.

"We are seeking guidance of that issue from the Attorney General and Parliament whether the money should to go to the party that brought them to parliament or the the new party,"he said.

Few months ago, President Museveni granted a request by the political parties seeking to increase funding from Shs10 billion to Shs 35 billion annually.

The increased funding was one of the resolutions reached during the Inter party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) Summit held in Entebbe.

The IPOD Summit comprises five political parties, which have representation in Parliament.

They are the ruling NRM, the Democratic Party (DP), Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC), Justice Forum (JEEMA) and the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
