IS MY VILLAGE COURT ONE OF THE RECOGNISED COURTS IN UGANDA?

Yes, your LC Village court is legally recognised.

According to the law, the LC I court such that one which sits either at local chairperson's office or home is allowed to handle certain issues and cases such as trespass, simple assaults, children issues, and simple domestic misunderstandings among others. When the case involves a child, the court is allowed to hear even more serious cases such as actual bodily harm, criminal trespass, affray, malicious damage to property among others

These courts are in LC I, LC II and LC III courts. The starting point is the LC I court and if you are not happy with what has been decided, then you have a right to go to the LC II and LC III. If you are still dissatisfied, then the law allows you to go the Chief Magistrate.

The courts are generally composed of five members of their jurisdiction chosen by the respective executive council of that area apart from the village and parish courts where all the members of the executive council of either the village or parish form the court. At least two of the members of each of these courts should be women
