Reflections; "Monumental Legacy of Gen. Fred Gisa Rwigyema."
By Fred Birahiira Ruhamya Kwiringira.
The greatest exploits of Rwigyema in the revolutions in Great Lakes Region are legendary. He was pivotal in the NRA bush war emerging in Museveni's government as the Army Commander and eventually as State Minister for Defence. He is one of the Heroes in the annuals of Uganda's liberation struggles.
The nagging limitation of being refugees made Rwigyema, Kagame, Kayitale, Kayumba Nyamwasa and others eventually make a daring attack on Rwanda in October 1990.
Without Rwigyema's strategic planning and Leadership although killed on the second day of the war would never have succeeded. It is his charisma, inspiration spirit, courage, motivation, closeness with Museveni, Salim Saleh Akwandwanaho and top commanders of Uganda that made it possible for the war to go on even when he was dead. There are many young people who joined because of their love for Rwigyema including Ugandans like Maj. Rwabwoni Okwir who did dynamic conquests including Congo expedition.
The war was tough but Rwigyema sprit, connection solid relations in Uganda paid off. There are usually attempts to rewrite History but Rwigyema's personality, charisma, contribution in Uganda's political journey defined Rwanda's fate and eventual progress of RPA.
The mysterious death of the brain of RPA/RPF . Rwigyema remains in dispute. The theories keep changing depending on who is telling the story. The questions remain ..who killed Rwigyem??? Is it wild bullet? Powe struggle of top commanders Dr. Baingana, Bunyenyezi, is hired assassin's from Uganda's security by Habuarimana and Mobutu? Who called Kagame from America ..did he come on his own? Who made Kagame the immediate replacement of Rwigyema, was it the high command of RPA or Ugandas influence? History has the answers.
Even as we celebrate Rwigyema's legacy and memory, we must challenge Museveni and Kagame to honour him by stopping unnecessary fights, quarrels, intrigue between Uganda and Rwanda. The resources wasted undermining each other, investing in petty friction should be used to uplift the poverty in boss countries.
If Rwigyema had lived it is a great possibility Uganda and Rwanda relations would be superb. From what my realtives who knew him, supported him believe he was good, committed to noble causes that he was would never deteriorate to levels that threat peace, love, unity and Humanity.
Rwigyema's seemed to have pursued war but with priestly sprit and mission. It is said he usually treated prisoners of war with humane sprit and care. Whenever he reflected on lives lost in wars he was hurt and am told at times he cried.
If Africa, Rwanda, Uganda is to advance from doldrums must resist from instigating insecurity, impunity, evil, wild wars, plunder. Few selfish must using the population for their own ends.
We have enough scars, graves, traumas to keep adding wood in fire to war flames. We must stop. We can better people.
It was Rwigyema's dream, the Okwir's whom he inspired. Many young people who died in the cause for liberty and Democracy.
It is a shame that after so many centuries Bazungu are stealing Congo's resources when Uganda and Rwanda would have worked with our Congolese brothers and Africa to create a formidable Army to manage our great deposits in our vast land.
The death of Rwigyema in his prime and many of our brothers, children should always be a reminder of what can go wrong. We must resist those taking us back to theatre of war and disunity.
Gen. Rwigyema was charismatic, dependable, respectful, amiable, loving, tolerant, peacemaker. To keep his legacy and his contemporaries as well to honour his legacy let's promote Unity and peace.
At times in my sanctuary, I imagine Rwigyema feels betrayed when he sees the bad relationship between Museveni and Kagame and by implication Uganda and Rwanda.
Africa must reinvent themselves...it is a shame that after five decades of self determination, Independence most populations over 30percent live below poverty line.
The monies spent fighting each other can be reinvested productive sectors and improve lives of our People.
It must have been the drive of Rwigyema, my brothers, cousins, Lutamaguzi, Chef Ali, Rwabwoni Okwir, Prof Lule, Sam Magara and his comrades. It is what Hon. Mathew Rukaikaire writes in his book and many other Heroes who treasure Unity, and Democracy.
Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Great Lakes region would be developed like Asian tigers if we were consistent to the causes that made the Rwigyemas fight.
Rwigyema like many in Luwero and else paid the highest paid the ultimate price we should never negate their legacies and sacrifices.
Africa deserves better. We have a duty to make that happen. As we remember the sacrifices of Rwigyema this season let's resolve to promote ideals of the sprit of the revolution. Rwigyema we honour your legacy with the Ruberezas and others. Our hearts go out to Jeannette and Gisa Junior, Teta. Your sacrifices were never in vain.
