{UAH} WHAT DOES THIS GAZETTING THING MEAN?
WHAT DOES THIS GAZETTING THING MEAN?
Many of us have heard of gazetting or of the Uganda gazette. So today we want to talk about why it is important and what it means.
A gazette is an official newspaper (we are not talking about tabloids like the "tomato" or "onion"). So gazetting means to announce or publish (something) in an official newspaper.
The Ugandan version is called "The Uganda Gazette" and it is an Official government journal. It is a weekly publication that is open and accessible to the public.
Simply put therefore, gazetting is the process of officially announcing or publishing something in the Uganda gazette for the benefit and purpose that the entire general Ugandan population be informed of that announcement or publication.
WHAT CAN WE PUT IN THE GAZETTE?
There are many legal documents that the law requires that a person must publish in this official Government Newspaper/ Journal before it can be recognised by the relevant laws.
So the Gazette contains notices, government declarations and supplements, bills, statutes, statutory Instruments and Legal Notices. For example before a law comes into force (starts working as a law), it must be published in the Uganda Gazette. Secondly, before you can legally change your name, you need to put up a notice in the Uganda Gazette so that everyone knows that you are serious about what you are doing. It is presumed by law that anything put into the Gazette has been seen by everyone.
WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?
The main purpose of the Uganda Gazette is to offer official and authentic legal public information to the public. It is to the extent that if anything is published in the Gazette, it can be taken that the public is duly informed about the matter contained in therein. This means that if any information is published in the Uganda Gazette, whether you have read it or not, legally it is seen as you have duly received that information.
