{UAH} The 1980 election
The 1980 election was held on 10th and 11th December with a voter turnout of 85.2%. Of the 126 parliamentary seats, UPC won 75. 18 were won unopposed because some opposition candidates were blocked at roadblocks on their way to nomination. That was 40 years ago. Dr. Chango Macho, a British educated university lecturer (London School of Economics) was disqualified from running for a parliamentary seat on the grounds of not being able to speak fluent English. His opponent a UPC candidate, went through unopposed
