{UAH} BUSHENYI: WOMAN MP CANDIDATE EUNICE TWOREKIRWE WITHDRAWS FROM RACE

In Bushenyi—

Independent candidate in the Bushenyi district woman Member of Parliament race, Ms Eunice Tworekirwe Kansiime has withdrawn from the race in order to maintain National Resistance Movement (NRM) party cohesion.

Ms Tworekirwe made the pronouncement late Sunday through a statement in which she said that she was advised by 'concerned' senior party leaders and elders to consider withdrawing her candidature.

"Permit me to notify you that after deep reflection upon the words of the senior NRM leaders and various opinion leaders, I have decided to bow out of the Bushenyi District Woman M.P race." Ms Tworekirwe announced in a statement released Sunday.

"Following my nomination to run as an Independent candidate, l was approached by concerned senior leadership of the NRM party both at NRM secretariat and district who requested that I consider withdrawing my candidature since I am equally an NRM supporter who firmly believes in its ideology of socio-economic transformation, patriotism, democracy and Pan-Africanism," Ms Tworekirwe's statement reads in part.

Ms. Tworekirwe said that her continued candidature would fuel intrigue and cause disharmony amongst NRM supporters in Bushenyi, and divide the NRM party.

She added: "After my discussions with the said NRM senior Leadership, I consulted widely and mostly among senior citizens and opinion leaders who almost unanimously urged me to consider the position of the senior party leadership."

Ms. Tworekirwe further stated that withdrawing from the race was a difficult decision to make, but she had to make it for purposes of avoiding intrigue and disunity in NRM party.

"It's a very difficult decision for me but in order not to fuel intrigue and disunity in our party and for the greater good of our party, it is necessary that I bow out since am not a flag bearer," She said.

Ms Tworekirwe's withdrawl from the woman MP race comes at the heels of reports that the Bashasha family where she is an inlaw had made attempts to stop her from contesting.

In her statement, Ms Tworekirwe denied the reports disregarding them as false and uncoordinated.

However, Bushenyi Ishaka municipality NRM chairperson Wilson Karuhanga rubbished Ms Tworekirwe's withdrawal from the race saying that she betrayed the NRM party having been nominated as an independent.

"She is welcome but as a party we shall not rush to trust her because she first ran to stand as independent. This is someone we expected to contest in NRM primaries and she disappeared only to come as an independent,"Karuhanga noted.
