DAY-TO-DAY AFFAIRS

KAMPALA - Uganda's capital Kampala and its environs were Thursday morning calm and business was going on normally following deployment of security personnel after the topsy-turvy, chaotic events of Wednesday in some locations.

On major roads, such as Jinja Road and Katwe, the roadblocks that had been set up during the COVID-19 lockdown were reinstated.

A ride through some of the areas that witnessed chaotic scenes shows businesses going on normally. In Bweyogerere and Kireka suburbs, there was presence of both military and Police personnel and shops were open and normal traffic on the road seen.

Security personnel also dotted the busy Entebbe Road and parts of the Northern Bypass.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said the situation was back to normal, but that Police had recorded some incidents of fires set up on roads, which he added was being contained.

"The situation is very normal, though we had started recording a few incidents in Kosovo in Lungujja, Mityana road. But Police is monitoring and we are calling upon members of the public not to look on. It is a selected few people who are doing this," he said.

Owoyesigire added that checkpoints had been reinstated on all major highways and he called upon members of the public to inform them of any illegal barricades that had been erected.

"We are calling upon members of the public to let us know of any illegal roadblocks that have been set up in their areas to please notify us."

At Kisekka market, both the military and Police were checking all the vehicles that were entering, with  mandatory identification by the motorists.

There was also traffic on most of the roads in Kampala.
