Biden's coronavirus plan: Confusion and contradictions

Joe Biden has made himself clear: There will be no national shutdown. Unless there will be.

Biden, keeping with his ongoing pattern of contradicting himself on how he will handle the coronavirus, promised that he would not shut down the economy but that, “I'm going to shut down the virus,” whatever that is supposed to mean. Biden had previously promised to shut down the country if scientists told him to.

This is not particularly surprising. Aside from the fact that a nationwide shutdown is a terrible idea, and many people would likely push back given Democratic politicians continue to break their own rules, Biden never had the authority to order a nationwide shutdown. But not having the authority to do something hasn’t stopped Biden from promising it before, even when he has admitted it.

Biden has been unable to make up his mind if he actually wants to institute a national mask mandate, though he wouldn’t have the power to do so. Biden insisted that such a mandate would be unconstitutional, except when he said his legal team thought the opposite, before saying it was, in fact, unconstitutional again. Most recently, Biden discussed his Schrodinger’s mandate with state governors this week.

Inconsistency has been the calling card of Biden’s coronavirus positions. Biden said he supported President Trump’s travel restrictions on China, even though he called them xenophobic more than once. Aside from that, Biden was unable to say during the campaign how he would have handled the virus any differently than Trump.

When Biden wasn’t trying to figure out whether his mandates were constitutional, he was busy disregarding the costs and mental health effects of more lockdowns.

Biden ran on the idea that he could handle the pandemic better than Trump, but, so far, all he has shown is contradictions and confusion. Biden won’t have the circus atmosphere of Trump’s press conferences, but, other than that, he has shown and said nothing that indicates he will do any better leading the country through these times.
