President Trump is likely to win the Republican presidential nomination for the third time in a row in 2024 if he tries to retake the White House, according to a new poll.

A survey of 765 GOP voters, released Tuesday by Politico and Morning Consult, found Trump with 53 percent support — vastly ahead of potential GOP competitors.

Vice President Mike Pence was the preference of 12 percent of Republicans and Trump’s eldest son and campaign surrogate Donald Trump Jr. came in third with 8 percent.

Three possible candidates had 4 percent support among Republicans, including Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who voted in February to remove Trump from office, former South Carolina Gov. and ex-UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Sens. Josh Hawley of Missouri, Tim Scott of South Carolina, Rick Scott of Florida and Tom Cotton of Arkansas each had 1 percent support, as did South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, who this year moved to squash rumors she was vying to replace Pence on the GOP ticket.

Not listed as a potential candidate was White House national security adviser Robert O’Brien, a lawyer best known for his work as a hostage negotiator, who Politico reports has told friends he’s interested in a presidential bid.

Although just one president has served non-consecutive terms — Democrat Grover Cleveland in the late 1800s — Trump is expected to remain firmly atop the Republican Party after he leaves office on Jan. 20, and recently launched the Save America leadership PAC — one vehicle for continued fundraising and organizing in the interim.

The survey released Tuesday asked a broader set of questions to 1,990 registered voters across the political spectrum and found that although 56 percent said they disapproved of Trump’s performance, some of his most controversial decisions were more popular.

For example, 53 percent of all respondents approved of — and just 30 percent opposed — Trump’s drawdown of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan before President-elect Joe Biden takes office. That drawdown received fierce bipartisan opposition in Washington.
