{UAH} I COMMAND MASAKA POLITICS & CAN KEEP MY MP SEAT WITHOUT BOBI, DP’S BABIRYE KABANDA ASSURES NUP’S NAMAYANJA

By Mulengera Reporters

Masaka Woman MP the wealthy Babirye Kabanda (currently seeking to become pioneer woman MP for Masaka City) says it's not true that she can't win her race without being endorsed by Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu. Kabanda, who is the National Treasurer for DP, says she is tired of being demonized by Florence Namayanja, Mathias Mpuuga, Abed Bwanika and other NUP heavyweights who insist that she has no authority to present herself to the voters as a Kyagulanyi campaigner.

Mpuuga says because he is the NUP overall boss for Buganda region, all politicians campaigning for Kyagulanyi must be deployed by him with express instructions especially when it comes to Masaka district where he is seeking reelection for 3rd term as MP for Nyendo-Mukungwe Division. Mpuuga faces Mukasa Mbidde of DP and a candidate from NRM.

Kabanda says she is tired of being undermined by the NUP trio who keep telling people that she doesn't deserve to be elected because she refused to leave DP and join NUP. She argues that Kyagulanyi can't win the Presidency without having the support of Ugandans from other political formations. She asserts that much as he is popular as an individual, Kyagulanyi can't rely on just NUP to become President. And this is why she is wondering why the NUP trio keeps persecuting those who remained in DP even when they have professed Kyagulanyi as the best for Presidency.

In her case, Kabanda, just like Mbidde, has already told DP candidate Norbert Mao that her vote is for Kyagulanyi but the NUP trio says that doesn't qualify her for the Woman MP vote for which they are fronting Juliet Kakande, a secondary school teacher to whom the NUP flag was given after Kabanda made it clear she can't abandon DP for any other party.

Kabanda faults Namayanja & Co for being childish wondering why they can't remember that it's DP which initially marketed Kyagulanyi through the reunion caravan into which she put lots of personal money as party treasurer. She says she can never go kneel before Mpuuga seeking to be assigned mobilizational roles to campaign for Kyagulanyi as the trio is insisting: that whoever is to campaign for Kyagulanyi in Masaka must first seek approval and endorsement by Mpuuga.

Kabanda says this is not the first time DP politicians are backing a non-DP Presidential Candidate without being required to first denounce their party membership. That in 2001, many DPs backed Dr. Kizza Besigye and the FDC boss never required them to first denounce DP simply because he appreciated the broader anti-Museveni struggle.

That in 2016, Amama Mbabazi never set such conditions for DP candidates who wished to associate with his Presidential Candidature. She insists that by persecuting Kyagulanyi supporters who remained in DP, the NUP trio is actually inadvertently working against the eventual victory of the very Presidential Candidate they purport to work for (because to overcome Gen Museveni, Kyagulanyi needs every vote and every statement of solidarity).

"Let's engage in mature politics dear colleagues because I'm the undisputed king-maker in Masaka and I don't need to first put the Kyagulanyi poster on mine to win this seat. The Masaka electors know me and when I speak they listen. I command them politically and I remain in charge here even if I don't leave my DP," Kabanda says in a message clearly aimed at the NUP trio of Mpuuga, Namayanja and Abed Bwanika. "I command Masaka and its the undisputed fact that the voters are always ready to act in whatever way I command them to. My campaign poster is clear and I have not disguised my love for DP and that's why I have the party symbol of the hoe on my poster. I want to remind those excited about NUP that Kyagulanyi was propelled up into national politics through the DP reunion meetings which I generously funded using my personal money."

The NUP trio stands accused of working so hard to wipe DP out of its Masaka stronghold by specifically targeting the four MP positions of Nyendo-Mukungwe, Kimanya-Kabonera, Masaka Woman MP Slot and that of Masaka City. The other position is that of pioneer Masaka City Mayorship for which Namayanja is facing off with Charles Kabanda (Babirye's hubby). In Kimanya, NUP's Bwanika is facing off with DP's Jude Mbabali as DP's Mbidde takes on NUP's Mathias Mpuuga for Nyendo-Mukungwe.

The two parties (NUP & DP), whose fights could easily advantage NRM to grab some of these seats, are also involved in intensive battle for the positions of Division Mayorship for Nyendo Mukungwe and Kimanya Kabonera. The respective candidates are DP's Denis Majwala Lukanga and NUP's Micheal Mulinda (for Nyendo) and DP's Dick Muwanga taking on NUP's Stephen Lukyamuzi for Kimanya Kabonera Division.

Mpuuga badly needs to deliver Masaka as one solid win for NUP as the same will strengthen his chances to become the next NUP Secretary General or National Chairman at the post-January 14th delegates' conference NUP will be organizing in months after general elections.

As Mulengera News previously reported, the NUP constitution will soon be amended to provide for elective positions and there are so far two antagonistic tendencies emerging in the party. One comprises of the young people, patronized by current SG David Lewis Rubongoya, whose members see the Mpuugas as too old to dominate NEC positions in the post-January 14th NUP. There will be some big fights relating to this debate and the forthcoming elective delegates' conference is the arena where all these contradictions will have to be resolved.
