{UAH} What do Canadian cops think of American police brutality? How do they think it can be prevented?
There is a Toronto Police constable named Jay Gray, and he wrote the following on Facebook:
As most of you are aware on Monday, May 25th just after 8pm a man named George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer. Police were called by a Cup Foods Employee suspecting that he tried to use a fake $20 bill.
As a Police Officer, I want voice my opinion on this matter. Before I do, I want to send my deepest condolences to Mr Floyd's family. I am in no way trying to take anything away from the pain the family and their friends are suffering right now.
I am beyond frustrated and disgusted by the turn of events that lead to the death of this man.
This is not what being a police officer is about. We have swore to an oath to protect and help the communities we serve.
Even the images of this police officers stone cold face, while allowing Mr. Floyd's life escape his body and knowing what was happening is sickening to me.
Due to these events, I will be called a racist because of the uniform I am wearing. That is simply not the case. Please don't blame all of us that are wearing a uniform. Blame the person that committed the murder. He is NOT what law enforcement is about or what it stands for. I will never attempt to justify his atrocious actions. We are expected to be held accountable.
He is simply a murderer that will NEVER wear a police uniform again.
I want to speak up for the 99% of police officers in the USA and Canada that do this job for the right reasons. As a police officer, I want to help people. I do not base my actions on the colour of an individual's skin colour. I listen to the human being in front of me and attempt to help make their life safer or less complicated.
Enough is enough! This shit has to end. There is no place in this world for brutal and violent behaviour by sworn police officers toward the citizens we are supposed to help and protect.
At times like this, I know it is hard to think this... Please remember that the vast majority (99%) of police officers want to serve and protect. We risk often risk out lives for total strangers, because that is what we signed up for.
We work hard to try and make connections with community. Make no mistake about it, police officers (including myself) do make mistakes and wrong decisions. However, we want to correct any issues we've created and move forward. Events like this make it nearly impossible to build stronger relationships with the community.
We are not all racist. We are not all killers.
We just want to help. We don't go to work everyday wanting to kill someone.
If you support the real officers that are out in the community and helping others, please consider sharing this.
