{UAH} Equal Opportunities Commission’s Sylvia Muwebwa to leave office this Friday as her controversial term comes to an end

Embattled Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) chief, Ms Sylvia Muwebwa, will this Friday, 5th February 2021 hand over office as her term came to an end on January 19th 2021.

The President, who is the appointing authority has reportedly declined to renew her contract. 

According to sources at the Commission, Muwebwa, whose term of office has been overshadowed by abuse of office and corruption charges, will briefly show up office to hand over office.

She is currently battling offences of Conspiracy to Defraud (2 counts) and Corruption, contrary to Section 309 of the Penal Code Act and Section 2 (t) of the Anti-Corruption Act 2009.

According to a charge sheet by the  Director of Public Prosecutions, Ntambi and the co-accused "between 19th November 2018 and 3oth April 2019 conspired to defraud the government of Uganda a sum of Uganda Shillings Thirty-Five Million, Two Thousand (UGX35,002,000).  The Chairperson is also involved in another conspiracy to defraud charge, involving UGX9,480,000. In this particular case, she is jointly charged with Mujuni Mpitsi, Agnes Edith Kamahoro, a Senior Personal Secretary and Olwor Sunday Nicholas, the Commission's Undersecretary.   

Prosecution says the accused officials conspired and requisitioned, approved, and forwarded the said monies for payment purporting that it was going to conduct sensitization activities in Karamoja Sub-region; to undertake an audit exercise of rural electrification program in Uganda; for development of 1 and 2 draft Commission HIV/Aids workplace policy; for monitoring exercise in Lower Local Government and for sensitization on equity and rights issues in lower local govt whereas not and which action they knew would cause financial loss to the Government.

On October 29th 2020, she was remanded to Kigo Prison until November 4th, 2020 when she was bailed.  

She has since changed her names from Sylvia Muwebwa Ntambi to Sylvia Muwebwa Nabatanzi.
